CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers, fourth on the NFL's career sacks list, on Friday announced his retirement after 17 seasons.
Peppers, 39, is projected by many to be a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection when he becomes eligible for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio, in five years. His total of 159.5 career sacks trails only Kevin Greene (160), Reggie White (198) and Bruce Smith (200). The next-closest active player is Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs, with 132.5.
"No doubt a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee," former teammate Kevin Donnalley, a guard with the Panthers early in Peppers' career and a member of the team broadcast crew the past few seasons, told ESPN. "Just the one stat alone, fourth in all-time sacks, makes him that.

One of the greatest overall athletes to ever play the game.

When he started playing, The Two Towers was a new movie, Tobey Maguire was debuting as Spider-Man, and the Iraq War hadn't started.

According to sportrac, he made $164,973,786 in salary throughout his 17 year career

He rarely, if ever, missed any games or practices too. The only year he didn't play all 16 games was his rookie year.

His high school running back highlights are making the rounds on Twitter (he’s a local here) That’s some entertaining stuff.

He made a play in a ho hum ACC game that I'll never forget. He was either playing OLB or standup DE and the opposing team dropped back to pass. It ended up being a roll out to the short side and he kind of rolled with the QB keeping his eyes on the QB but maintaining his zone coverage. The QB was rolling right and threw right. It was either a shitty pass or a pass that was designed to be thrown away. Regardless, Julius Peppers jumped up about 48", grabbed the ball as his body was carrying him out of bounds, and assist passed it to one of his teammates. Interception. I don't think anyone on the field knew what happened and I don't think I have seen it more than 1 or 2 times since.

That's exactly the play I was thinking of . For whatever reason, it was engrained in my head that Julius Peppers made that play. I remember watching that game as a kid and my dad yelling at me to come in the living room to watch. Good times.

Apparently not since Kevin Greene didn't get in until his 12th time
