It may have more to do with how much I care about this as a relevant "issue" but I can't recall seeing anything about or like that from him.

Yes, lots of lots of atrocities happen on this Earth. They don't mean God doesn't exist. In fact, millions and millions of people have found God through hard times. This goes back to His teachings in the Bible.
