Absolutely. I think the estimate is that at any one time, there are about 50 ACTIVE serial killers in the U.S. at any moment. Most of them are never caught. It sounds like a lot, but you have to remember that the Baton Rouge area had at least three CAUGHT in the last 20 years or so. Derrick Todd Lee, the guy that was whacking people up in the Felicianas a year or two ago, and the guy last week that killed 5 people at 2 separate places. That's just off the top of my head.

It's very difficult for police to solve random murders where the victim has no apparent connection to their killer unless the killer makes a mistake and leaves them something to work with that can lead back to them. Remember the D.C. snipers and how long it took to catch them? Who do the police even start looking for when someone drops dead from a rifle shot at a gas station? Those guys likely wouldn't have gotten caught if they'd just switched up their cars. They were arrested sleeping in the car they'd modified to allow one of them to shoot through a hole in the trunk.
