Tell me about axis hunting in TX

Me and the cousin have been tossing g around the idea of going on a axis hunt during the spring.
We were thinking about TX once we learned that they are pretty much a problem out west. Also read they have an open season in some parts.
Can anyone give some insight? Looking for a bow hunt

Amazing experience, not really much of a problem though as you stated. Absolutely beautiful deer and some of the best tasting meat for sure.(10x better than whitetail) if you know how to cook it. Season should be year round too.
Spring/Summer is a fun time to go.

Non native species. Always open season. Big animals. Don’t have a set annual breeding schedule like whitetail, so very common to shoot a buck in full velvet or pregnant doe. Better eating than whitetail and overall just beautiful animals. We had a ton on our company deer lease. Rancher/landowner is 93 and sold it last year as soon as the season was over. Pisses me off. Loved that place.

Beautiful animal and eats good. I’d put the back strap against beef filet any day and way better eating than white tail.
Cool horns and if you find one with a nice hide I recommend tanning it.
Can be hunted year round and you can probably find a more cost effective hunt during the summer months.
I have a vendor taking is out next week for an Axis Hunt.

The Rocksprings area is a great place to go. No need to go high fence around there. They are plentiful and good number of large bucks. June July for the rut and they will be growling/bugling. Did a hunt this past July and killed a stud. Low fence ranch was overrun with them. Just hunted the water holes. Also you can visit Texas Hunting Forum for even more insight. A lot of knowledgeable people on there. A good outfitter is Mike McKinney who owns West Texas Hunt Organization. He runs a great outfit and has a lot of land access. I can give you the name and number for the guy I call when I want to get a hunt set up too. He is a guide for other outfitters and knows a lot of people. It wouldn’t be a super posh set up, but he’s a great guy and works hard to get you on animals. Also does arrow head digs in the off-season.

The antlers make really cool knife handles if you are in to that sort of thing

I wonder how an axis would do in South Louisiana/Mississippi? Seems to be doing great in Texas?

Fantastic eating. Hunted them regularly in the Texas Hill Country when I leased over there. My son shot a 30” buck in full velvet-the prettiest mount I’ve ever had done. Have several chairs covered in their hides. The hides are beautiful and don’t shed over time like whitetail hides do.
