Agreed.

But if you believe in yourself, that's what competent franchises do (see: OKC and George, Toronto and Kawhi)

Different situations. Us trying to convince Jrue to re-sign with AD having signed the super max would be similar to George. If George left, Westbrook is still locked up long term.

Toronto is different too because they've made playoff runs and are trying to show Kawhi he's the missing piece. We're trying to keep our heads above water and convince AD the best is yet to come 7 years in.

If nothing comes before this trade deadline and we know he's not signing then my preference is just to move him to the highest bidder.

My plan B would be waiting until the trade deadline to see if a move could be made to at least make his decision harder. If nothing comes by next trade deadline though we would be idiots to hold on to him.

Maybe at this point the Conely deal makes the most sense.

You get a third star who's under contract for 3 more seasons, and yes you burn your first rounder but you get back Zhaire Smith who may be as good or better than whoever you would have drafted at 8-16.

If you go on a run (even if you miss the playoffs) you can still tell AD "hey we've got the core with you/Mike/Jrue now. We're improving the roster further this summer so give us until the deadline." Unlikely but maybe it works.

To be clear, it would go like this

Pels this summer: AD, we are going to put an elite roster around you. Give us that chance. Then, in February, if you don't feel like we have done enough to make you wanna stay long term, we will work together to find a trade that makes you happy.

Talk with him throughout the season and if he can't commit to a high likelihood or probability that he will re-sign in summer, you move him in February
