He lost because until the 2018 race no one outside his district in El Paso County had even heard of him. He gained traction readily, ran a good campaign and nearly pulled the thing out of the fire. Everyone in my family and everyone I talked to voted proudly for Beto.

Texas is changing. I know 220 of the state's 254 counties vote Republican, in many of them by ridiculous percentages (95% in Roberts, Ochiltree, and Dawson counties, for instance), but the other 34 is where most people live, and will determine national and statewide elections for generations.
