I have been using tow straps but they are not ideal. What do y'all use? Is there any reason a trap bar wouldn't suffice instead of the purpose built handles?

You could use a trap bar.

I was always a big fan of suitecase deadlifts.

Other options are suitcase carries, offset farmers walks or single arm overhead DB walks.

I also like using a kettlebell and if you’re feeling really crazy, going inverted grip and even doing a tandem walk like you’re trying to pass a sobriety test.

Otherwise if you’re just going for weight then nothing wrong with using a trap bar. I don’t know what your space is like but you can even throw in some deadlifts every 10 feet or so if you really wanna kill yourself

That's what I use.

A trap bar will work just fine. If you want to do trap bar deads, it is probably easier than handles and will work just fine for farmers.

Current favorite is to walk with shoulders shrugged, so they're constantlu contracted. Great trap workout.

I made some from landscaping timbers. Here’s a link for the post I made about it on Reddit.

Kettlebell with a thick handle. Just depends on your hand size & strength

70 or 100 LBs for 200 or 400m distances

Kettlebells work amazing for grip training.

Also, I've used sandbags.

The upside/downside of thicker handles in farmers walks is:

Upside: fantastic for grip.

Downside: thinner handles let you stress your core, back and traps more bc grip isn't a limiting factor.

As an alternative, I've thrown fat gripz on my implements and that will get your grip good.

idk, i feel it pretty good all over. Heavy is relative, but something you could go a full 200m without dropping but wanting to drop it by the 150m is ideal.

Farmers are a great exercise. You'll get a ton from them.

I just meant that grip is your limiting factor, especially with fat handles. If you want maximal stress on traps, back and core, grip going first keeps you from maximally stressing traps, back and core.

Regardless, farmers walks are incredible. I remember listing them on here as the one exercise I'd do if I could only do one. Skinny or fat, you'll get a lot from them.
