is stupid, what distinguished college football from other sports in American history and makes it so compelling on a weekly basis is the overwhelming and immense emphasis it places on regular season performance, every regular season game is a one-game playoff and college football exists in a format that incentivizes undefeated seasons whereas, in the NFL, undefeated seasons are a goal, an accomplishment. The more we expand the CFP, giving one/two-loss teams mulligans with this tournament, the more we diminish the entire point of college football, its distinguishing and compelling format that sets it apart.
I would listen to this argument but it has already proven to be false. Alabama has made the CFP with one loss, heck, they made it by not even winning their own division, much less conference.
I think what you mean to say is that one loss is devastating for teams like Iowa or Virginia or Arizona, but if your Alabama or Clemson one loss is okay, just don't lose two.
I'm an FCS fan and I can tell you the conference and playoff chases are fun to watch and follow. Each weak as the season winds on there is debate on who is in/out and there are many games each week that have playoff implications. Do it on an FBS level with an 8 team playoff and it would be way more interesting than it is right now.
