Hypothetically, you’re a #1 pick at your position ...

SIAP:
Your agent has already told ya that you’re going 1st round barring a bad combine, your team is also in the college football playoffs, what do you do?
The decision for players who are potentially 1st round NFL draft picks to shut it down after the regular season could really diminish the interest in post season bowl games.
This scenario in my opinion is valid for anyone potentially getting drafted in the first 3 rounds. Lots of money baws, you suffer a serious injury in a bowl game or college playoffs your draft stock in some measure is affected. If I’m an elite athlete that’s ran the gauntlet of P5 college football games and my draft grade pre-combine is 3rd round or higher I’m seriously considering shutting it down. Very few people get the opportunity to be paid millions of dollars to play professional football and if you blow out a knee, injure your back, hip joint, etc. your gonna be sick that you put all that work in and then you get hurt in your last college game while another player who’s sitting home moves up the draft board. This is a tough one.
Yeah, I know, a player could get hurt at anytime they’re playing the game but if you’ve made it through to the point where the NFL is pretty much a done deal do you risk it?

Play, any other bowl you sit out.
People that say players that sit out the Sun Bowl have character issues are absolute morons, but if I'm an NFL GM and a player doesn't play in a game for a championship, I do have an issue with that. If there are two players you value equally and one sits out the playoff I'm taking the other guy. The player that sits out would still get drafted in the first round, but each slot costs you money.

You’re gonna get exposed at the senior bowl anyway. Just play

You damn right! I’m a Mizzou fan but if Drew Lock said I’m out of the bowl game next man up I wouldn’t like it but I would definitely understand.

So basically worst case scenario happened to Jaylon Smith and things seem to have worked out ok for him. I know he lost out on money but you face risk every day of your life. Guys tear ACLs in practice all the time. Guys get in car accidents.
Winning a national title is a tremendous opportunity.

Why play your junior year if you’re a projected first or second round pick after your sophomore year. Fromm and Tua should both rest up their junior years. Trevor Lawrence should just hang out in a gym until 2021. Why play?

I know you are acting like that would be ridiculous but I think that would be very reasonable

This may be the only scenario that justifies the risk.

I’m not being completely facetious. Why draw the line at your last bowl game? Nick Bosa had the right idea.

Exactly! Most of these athletes are not coming from wealthy families, If I’m their agent they’re shutting it down.

I wouldn't
If I was bosa, I would have 100% shut myself down prior to the season starting

Well, yeah, if you get injured there's no reason to try to rush back. These guys do still improve so I'm not sure sitting out an entire year will be the most prudent thing to do. Sitting out an entire year could stung your development and ending up costing you more in the long run.

Agreed wholeheartedly, my thing is the game of football is more than simply money to these players, its a way of life, its a bond, a family in many ways because those playing beside you are your brothers and you have the opportunity to achieve something that not many can ever claim when it comes to historical legacy concerning championships. As someone who has played lower-level sports (not undergraduate), I wanted to win the championship as bad if not more than attaining a collegiate sports scholarship or large pro contract because that's how deep my love for the game was, I wanted that distinction, I wanted that legacy and I pretty much guarantee you those college football players in the playoff feel the same damn way bc their attachment to this game and it dates back so so long for them.

Agreed. If an "academic" student on scholarship got a rock-solid opportunity to leave school and start the next Microsoft or Apple, we'd have no problem with them dropping out of class and pursuing their dream.
For any athlete legitimately in the first 3 rounds, they're dealing with the chance to earn enough money to change their families for generations to come. It's really a no-brainer for those guys.
The real question is where it stops. Could a talented junior with half a season under his belt decide to feign an injury or otherwise get out of playing a full season to ensure his draft-day health?

Picture yourself being 21-22 years old and possibily making 400-800k a year. I would definitely sit out.

Kinda sucks but I agree with y’all, I love the game but I get it, these players are in a unique position to earn CEO money and that’s not easy. Lol!
