I got the same and I have been waiting because I thought the heat would fry everything. I guess I have been a little too conservative.

Looks like LSU's bye week just got a little busier for me

LSU AgCenter says you can plant carrots as early as September 1st. But I waited until it wasn’t AS hot.

I thought it still might be too hot, but they are doing very well so far. Just have to keep them well watered. Like, every day twice a day.

I have absolutely zero luck getting lettuce to sprout in the seed tray. I have no clue if I got a bad batch or what but I've tried 3 times so far with zero germination. I figured by now I should have at least gotten luck with one.

What kind of soil are you using? I find that the Miracle gro Seed starter soil is the best, and that peat stuff they sell with the seed tray kits is crap.

Do carrots need full sun?

I have a raised bed under a tree that only gets about 3 hours of sun a day, will they do ok in there?

Same for cabbage, broccoli, & lettuce?

It was my first garden & I planted peppers/tomatoes/cucumber and of course that did not go well, thinking it might be ok for carrots, cabbage, broccoli, & lettuce.

Yeah, according to the AccuWeather app, yesterday should be the last day of 90 degree weather for the year. I still think its full of it but it gives me a little more confidence.

If I remember correctly, it said full sun on the seed packet.

Everything I've read says carrots & brocolli need full sun.

Cabbage and lettuce looks like full sun/partial shade but idk if 3 hours would be enough.

Broccoli and cauliflower can tolerate some shade. Lettuces too. Especially if it’s hot. I’ve only successfully grown carrots twice. Both times they were in full sun.

Took a few pics this afternoon after watering the garden.

Romaine lettuce on the left, cabbage on the right. Had to sow more cabbage seeds on the end cause I miscalculated how many plants I’d need.

The lettuce is looking really healthy. I’m hoping they continue to thrive. The cabbage had a tiny bit of transplant shock, but they are coming back around. They’ll be fine.

Carrot sprouts are looking good so far. I’ve read that they need to be watered very frequently until they really establish themselves. So I’ve been watering twice a day.

Early girl tomatoes along my trellis.

Better boy and bush steak tomato plants.

There’s quite a few small tomatoes on them. So far so good.

How much do you prune your tomatoes?

Not too much. I’ll prune bad leaves off, and when the foliage starts getting crowded I’ll thin it.

Planted some Romaine and Salanova lettuce from Johnnys seed, broccoli and cauliflower. I planted some mid to late July in trays and quickly became tired of moving them in and out of shade and wA having problems watering so o made a table with a misting system set up on a timer and had great results.

I have a pretty big garden. It expands every spring lol. I have a 41 hp John Deere and a 6’ tiller so it’s kinda hard not to get carried away. Right now I’d say it’s close to 3,000 sq ft. And I have three raised beds and plant on making 2 or three more for next spring. I want to have enough area so that I can plant things that make take longer or cross over growing seasons like onions, potatoes. My plans to become as self-sufficient as possible. We can a lot of veggies, freeze a lot, have chickens, getting a few goats, maybe one day a pig or two to do a boucherie every late winter early spring. Besides hunting it’s all that I do and enjoy every second learning and being outside.
I grow my own seeds a lot, purchased a few seed starting trays from Hoss tools they last a lifetime, has 160 cells I believe. One six pack of broccoli transplants from the farm store is $3.75 I can get $1.50 worth of seed and grow 160 broccoli plants.

I'm pretty jealous. Right now I'm on a 1/2 acre and my wife won't let me do nearly as much as I want to, I don't blame her too much though.

If I had my way I'd be doing a lot of the same as you (multiple gardens, ducks, chickens, a pig or 2, bee hive, etc.) I've almost have her talked into the the duck idea currently.

For now I'll have to be content with my 8x12 garden (maybe expand it in a year or 2) I just started, 4 fruit trees, and 4 blueberry bushes.

In a perfect world our next move will be a permanent one onto multiple acres to give me room to do everything.

Pillage, you can take the carrot sets that are bunched up and replant them. You have plenty of room in that row to do that.
