Josh Marshall calls it "wraithing" after LOTR - when you serve the orange lord you inevitably end up a dessicated husk of your former self. I think Mattis is an exception to that.

Nobody would give a shite about being made to take ridiculous positions if they knew they'd have no issues making bank after. But we're so polarized that I'm not sure that guarantee is there, so if you're reasonably conservative and don't want to become some pathetic frick like Matthew Dowd after leaving, you have to think twice.

Everyone who goes to work for Trump knows the falling out will come, but I don't think the pool would be so shallow if post-admin life looked more lucrative.
