It’s merchandising first and the film a distant second.
I do'nt disagree, but everyone shits on the movie b/c "i'm too cool to like Larry the Cable guy", which by the way i don't care for his comedy either.
Fact remains that they made a movie that, as i said, every boy from age 2-16 loves and it has made arse loads of money. How is that Cars has made more money than Transformers merchandise all time, and Toy Story merchandise, as much as fricking Barbie, more than Ninja Turtles and Minions combined? That doesn't happen if you make a 2nd rate film.
I'm not trying to say Cars is some great movie, but it did what it was supposed to do, and that was entertain kids and make them want to buy the merchandise. If kids didn't love Lightning McQueen and Mater, they wouldn't buy the toys, see Planes for an example of what kids didn't buy. What made Cars so much more successful than Planes?
I know my kids didn't watch Planes 5 times a day like they did with Cars.
Spider-man and Batman have been around for over 50 years, yet the 12 years Cars has existed it has sold as much merchandise as those two. What makes Lightning McQueen more fun to play with than Spiderman and Batman?
It's hard for adults to admit it was actually a decent movie b/c they are scared what people will think of them for liking Larry the Cable Guy is what it comes down to.

I threw out some Bakshi stuff.
Wasn't crow enough I guess (yes yes I know the comic is R Crumb. I'm standing by it.)

Pffft.
Dreamworks' "The Road to El Dorado" should be on that list.
Great use of Bing Crosby/Bob Hope/Lana Turner road movie theme. Fantastic color animation, adult humor and sex appeal.
