Swan Song by Robert McCammon. It was written - and takes place - in the 80s when the threat of nuclear Armageddon was real. It's one of my favorite books.

I'll second Swan Song, though it is heavy on fantasy.
Canticle for Liebowitz is really good, also a bit more sci-fi/fantasyish.
Earth Abides is good, a more realistic look at the apocalypse.
Good Omens is one of my favorite books, hilarious and heavy on fantasy. The TV series should be out soon.
