re: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendation & Discussion Thread

Ok, a few quick books I'll mention that I'm pretty sure haven't been discussed yet.
One is a book that just came out recently, Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliott. Its a bit out of my wheelhouse as I prefer fantasy to SF generally, but the premise of a retelling of Alexander the Great's story in a space opera setting seemed intriguing and I really like some of Elliott's earlier stuff.
Anyway, I really enjoyed the book so if any of that sounds interesting I would recommend it. One potential trigger warning I guess if it bothers you: she gender flips the family. By that I mean the main character Sun is a girl (based on Alexander), her mother Eirene (based on Philip), and her father Joao (based on Olympia). Didn't really bother me, but I figured I should mention it. One last thing, this looks to be a trilogy with the next two titles already listed, but you know how that goes.
Secondly, there are two trilogies by K.J. Taylor that might be worthwhile. The first, called the Fallen Moon trilogy, follows a main character and his griffin as they set about freeing the guy's people. Its pretty dark and violent, but I would strongly recommend it for pretty much any fantasy enthusiast. The second trilogy, called the Risen Sun trilogy, follows the main character's daughter. This one didn't work for me as well, but it may for others. I have a pretty hard time with any series that jumps generations. I don't like going from one person to their extended family, just a personal preference. But if that doesn't bother you, it could be a good read.
Lastly, I just want to mention one of my personal favorites by Jennifer Fallon, the Second Sons trilogy. It was her first stuff written a while back, but I love it and reread it probably once a year at least. Its a bit different in that it follows a character who isn't really a warrior or magic-user (or both) like most stories, he is a genius when it comes to mathematics and science. I enjoyed that different perspective and the Machiavellian politics that the story goes into. May not be for everyone though. She also has a number of other fantasy books but I found diminishing returns and eventually stopped reading her later stuff so no idea about those.
Anyway my 2 cents for now.

That first trilogy sounds really intriguing, and i've heard good things about Second Sons, but need to check it out.

Too lazy to go back and look, but someone recommended the Greatcoats. I’m now on book four and i’ve been entertained so far. I’m not sure how much more punishment Falcio can survive at this point. Have plowed through the first 3 audiobooks in the last week.

Ya, I read that series a month ago or so. Fauci takes a whole lot of punishment.
The Greatcoats Lament scene in book 2 was just about my limit lol

Kevin Hearne- Iron Druid series
Although it really went off the rails in the later books.....

Iron druid did fall off the rails towards the end. Granuaile became insufferable, the Oberon jokes were stale, Owen was funny until he got involved with the sloth, and Atticus became a cuck. Luke Daniels did a great job with the narration though. dip me balls in the queens tea.

In the last book for sure, it was terrible. I was mentioning to Sally a few pages back(when he was asking for a reading order to what he hadn't read of my booklist from the first page of this thread) that I almost hesitate to even suggest the iron druid series these days because the last book was so bad.

I think Owen was definitely the only bright spot of the final book (and I even enjoyed the sloth).

I saw that Poppy war is available on Libby - is that a pretty easy series that would be good to listen to?
Don't want to have it be something really convoluted as I don't think that would work for me on audiobook.

Gah, I just bought both of those on Audible. I've heard that the two books are amazing and that the author will get huge.

Haha - ya i have the audible account where i get 1 credit a month and do a lot of cross referencing and waiting for stuff to come onto the audible 2 for 1 thing.
Mainly i've been getting those Great Courses things - at least a lot of the ancient history ones and a few other things. Some of them are like $75 - $100 retail so the 1 credit thing is a good deal.

I bought the first book on my Kindle a long time ago at the same time I bought the first book of the Jade War series because both were on cheap sales, wound up reading jade War but never getting around to poppy war yet. I see the third book is coming out in a couple months, guess I should start reading it soon.

Anyone here read The Kingdom of Liars by Nick Martell? I think its relatively recent. Just finished it, kind of a weird read. There were parts that I really enjoyed, but a couple of key things were really shaky. I do think the ending is really solid, and I definitely am more excited for what comes next.
Also, I know it was discussed a lot some pages back, but I finally read Dune. Enjoyed it overall, but probably not to the level as would be expected. Kind of had a choppy feel to it, especially the back end which just kind of accelerated to a climax. But maybe its just my preference for fantasy as opposed to sci/fi.
Not sure what to read next. May go for a sort of palette cleanser and read some ya or urban fantasy series.

Craig Schaefer's Daniel Faust series (and spinoffs) is a really good urban fantasy series of you haven't read him already. I'm assuming you've read stuff like Dresden probably.

Yeah, I used to love Dresden but have become somewhat disillusioned by recent books.
Also have read the Faust books, they are really good. I enjoyed the spinoff Harmony Black series as well.
Favorite urban fantasy series at this point is probably the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka. Hopefully it will continue strong as it reaches the double digits in books.
I ended up starting a new fantasy series by Stephen Aryan, I think the first book is called Battlemage. I have six Aryan books, I think they are two different trilogies but not 100% sure.

Yeah, this is a great series too. One of the more interesting series since Verus has to use his brain to beat stronger enemies most of the time, given the limitations of his powers in many ways.

Just about finished with the 2nd Farseer audiobook. Still enjoying it, but its starting to grind on me a little bit as it moves so slowly. Probably just because I really dont' care about Fitz and Molly very much and the whole books has just been them kind of sitting there with a couple brief action scenes.
I wish i was out questing with Verity instead of stuck in Buckkeep

Hah, though at least the last book doesn't have as much of that and a little more action.

haha I mean I like Fitz enough - but I don't think i'm gonna go on a 12 book series with him.
I'm gonna call it quits after book 3. Maybe someday down the road I'll feel like coming back.
