It was a really good series I felt - definitely a very, very different series with a unique viewpoint I enjoyed.

I will say that if it got made into a tv show, the M/TV board wouldn't like some of the characters and relationships it highlighted; however, I never found any of that stuff very intrusive overall.

Broken Earth is very good, and as Sally said it's unique.

Also as Sally said, book 1 is on the lower end of the WOT series. I'd personally go:

Great-books 4-6
Very good- 2,3, and 12
Good-7 and 11
Average-1 and 14
Mediocre-8, 13
Bad-9 (last 150-200 pages are outstanding)
Complete garbage-10

Yeah, probably in the mediocre catagory for me, not as good as 14 I don't think.

Just started The emperor's blades on audible. I really really like it.

I listened to both fifth season, obelisk gate, then City of stairs. And man I really hated all of them. I think it is the narrator that I don't like. A lady read both of them and no change in inflection or pauses between different characters talking or thoughts. Just not good story telling I think. I bought all three broken earth books on nook and city of circle and will read when I'm not so busy and see if it's really the narrator or the book.

But regardless this author Brian staveley can tell a story I love the first book so far. I'm a little past half way.and he has a good narrator, same guy that did the lightbringer series on audible

I really enjoyed both trilogies and thought both Robert Jackson Bennett and Jemison did a masterful job of storytelling. Maybe it was the narration.

I really enjoyed these:

The Three Body Problem
The Dark Forest
Death’s End
The Redemption of Time
Seveneves

What should I read next? Thanks.

Never heard of this. Just read the synopsis, and it looks interesting.

Have you read the Expanse novels yet? Not as sciencey or philosophical as Three Body Problem, but a really good series.

If you are looking for fantasy, First Law Trilogy is good. I normally suggest the Gentlemen Bastards series, but the author won't get off his arse and finish the books.

Unfortunately I have not had time to read like I used to. Last book a read was I believe a Brent weeks book over a year ago.

I'm always working or driving to work. I can listen at those times.

It would be cool if you could link a Kindle/nook with audible and have them share data to start your reading or listening off at same spot.

So does everybody just listen to all these books now?

I've never done an audio book yet, but now i'm questioning whether people even read them when they say they've read a book or have they just listened to most of them.

I can't do audio books myself, the pace of the reading is too slow and drives me crazy.

I think most of the people who do audio books do both audio and regular, I know Sally does.

At one point in this thread we actually had a page long discussion on what reading actually means, whether audio is included or not

That's me. Driving, working, cooking, im listening. If I'm just relaxing or sitting around, I'm reading. Reading is definitely faster, but not possible sometimes. And I care more about the story than how it is consumed.

I'll answer that. No, it does not count

Just curious, why are audio books so much slower? Im getting burnt out on my Podcast so i'll probably sign up but I was surprised to see you say its that much slower. But im not a super fast reader, my memory is so bad i'll read stuff over again or stop and think about stuff I just read

Started book two of WoT. Just a few chapters in and I already like it better than book 1. Im glad there is a Moiraine POV in it.

Also, im frustrated because now that i've watched the show, I cant get what the show characters look like out of my head so thats how I picture them while im reading now

I'm an extremely fast reader, so it probably wouldn't be that slow for everyone. The pace of reading being so much slower tends to bore me and I wind up tuning it out and not focusing.

And that must suck picturing the show characters while reading, particularly since almost none of them look like their book descriptions. And most of them don't act particularly like the book versions either.

Not sure how they are. I listen on 1.3x speed if I'm listening to an audio book.

Could always look at the licensed art well before the shows existed. I was going to link some of it, but it's all quite spoiler-y with the captions.

Timing wise would really depend on the book for me if it is faster or slower. I can finish Eye of the World in about 10 - 12 hours (did it on a Sunday after show was moving forward) so it is way faster to listen but that is also a book I have read a ton.

But, I usually stick to non-fiction for audiobooks these days, mainly for long car rides, when I am fishing, doing the row machine, or something like that. Have trouble paying attention if I try and do it while working at the desk and dont' get anything out of it (probably since I'm trying to read and type unrelated stuff).

I get way more out of audiobooks for nonfiction usually compared to reading - and those I move to as fast as possible, usually hoping for around 1.75 - 2x. At those kind of speeds I feel like it is definitely faster for me to listen than read for most non-fiction.

For most fiction, I can speed read over a lot of stuff, kind of filling in the blanks for stuff that isn't too dense so it goes fast.

Non-fiction I usually need every word and also get more out of it if I can sit and think while I keep listening, i'll go back if I've gotten lost but it does not happen too much. Fiction on audiobooks, I can't stay focused.

very very dumb Wheel of Time - Great Hunt question...

**SPOILERS**

I dont even know if I want to know this answer because it might be spoilers If it is, dont worry about it. But how is Baalzamon not dead? I mean I get it if he can just transform himself like in LOTR when Sauron is stuck down, his spirit left his physical body and he eventually became the Necromancer. But they dont explain how he's still alive. At the end of book 1 you're like, ok, he's dead. Book two, 1st chapter, he's back, and so far no explanation how. Its almost like what happened to him at the end of book one never happened.

Like I say, its a dumb question, just didnt know if there was a basic answer I missed somehow. Is just a different part of Baalzamon alive? Im just maybe halfway through book 2 so maybe i'll get a better answer as I go on.

On the second book of Scalzi's "The Interdependency" series. I've never read Scalzi before, and I'm really enjoying his style.

You'll get a better answer on this down the line. One of Jordan's favorite sayings back in the day was read and find out, he'll explain it eventually.
