Books 2 was excellent I think and so was most of Book 3. I never really like endings to series as much as the middle sections though for some reasons.

I really enjoyed N.K Jemisin’s writing style, but I could see some people not connecting to it. Hopefully it grows on you and enjoy the series I know I did.

Anyone read The Cycle of Galand?

The Fates Forsaken (prequel and 1 and 2)

Belgarath the Sorceror

Being offered on audible as 2 for 1 right now

LINK

Some other good fantasy stuff I've read - LOTR, Shadow Campaigns Book 1, Joe Abercrombie, Mark Lawrence.

But I've read most of those and would really want a full series to listen to.

I'm trying to use up extra credits so if anyone sees any good sci fi, standalones, etc. let me know

I think im going to binge read book one of Wheel of Time since the show is coming out. I swore i'd never read them because I didnt like the fact that another author finished the series and I had a buddy of mine constantly talked about them being better than Tolkien which drove me nuts. Almost solely didnt read them out of spite just because of him. Im petty.

Mad its going to interrupt my First Law reread but i'd like to read the 1st book before I watch the show.

Don't hold a grudge and let this guy ruin your enjoyment of the series - also you will probably hold your nose up at certain points of book 1 due to the similarity to LOTR. But the series really comes into its own in Book 2 - so at least get through 2 before making a decision whether or not to finish it.

Other than that, enjoy

I like it better than Tolkien to be honest. I started reading it before I read LOTR.

It’s not better. I just like it better.

Ya, personally I come back to it way more as it holds a ton of nostalgia for me in addition to being awesome

Is reading all 14 essential? I certainly dont mind reading that many if they're good but just curious if it is one continuous story or could you view it as multiple like Silmarillion/Hobbit/LOTR and be fine stopping somewhere. I have a terrible memory so I would probably need to reread books 1-5 or so before I kept going. It sucks, but by the time I got to probably book 8 I will have forgotten most of the earlier stuff unless I read it again.

Could maybe skip ten . It’s by far the weakest of the series. I read them all a year ago and loved the whole journey. Yes it is one story to answer your question and the author who finished it is who I’ve been binging since. Convinced my wife and another friend to read Wheel and they both loved it too and are also diving into Sandersonland now.

Started WoT. About 100 pages in. Definitely reads like The Fellowship so far, which is definitely a good thing for me.

Im going to try and stay in front of the episodes, hopefully 100+ pages will keep me in front of the 1st episode. I personally like to read the books 1st.

Wish there would be a book/show thread that didnt spoil future stuff lol

Very hard to draw the line lol.

I hope you enjoy the books. I would definitely try and finish more than 100 pages if you want to be ahead of the first three episodes that drop.

Got a question that hopefully shouldn't require spoilers...

I went back and read it twice but in the beginning when they are telling the story of the Dark One and the Dragon, unless im reading it wrong, the Dragon locks up the Dark One right? I took that as he was against him. Almost all of the Dragons men were killed but they were still able to put the Dark One away.

It not long after talks about how the Dragon and Dark One are essentially on the same side.

Am I reading that wrong? I have to be.

I'll just say that a lot of people in the world have ingrained beliefs that are not reflective of the actual situation. Some characters / groups of people are not reliable narrators on certain subjects and many groups disagree on various aspects of the world.

You will learn who to trust, who you agree with, etc. The unreliable narrator aspect doesn't really intentionally misleads the reader, but just gives you some insight as to how certain groups and people may be wrong in their beliefs - its one of the best features in the series IMO and makes it fun to read and reread seeing how your opinions change on certain topics, institutions, how people handle certain situations, etc.

He very much tries to make hte world map to how our own world views things like history, religious / spiritual beliefs, political / cultural disagreements or how cultures view one another (there isn't a big racial aspect) - lots of disagreement about what the reality of the situation is.

Is the 1st book in TWOT considered to be one of the best in the series? Just finished and im about to start book 2.

My shortened take on book one was is that is good, not great. I enjoyed the book no doubt, but I was slightly disappointed.

Im sure over 14 books there is bound to be some major character development but with book one there really isnt any character that you really care about or one that has an interesting back story other than Rand.

I think the lack of dialog knocks it down a bit for me. Its more of the characters thinking and description of places/towns than actual conversation.

No 1st book is middling at best in the series - probably ranks about 9th out of 14 for the average reader with 1 being the best obviously.

Book 4 is most often quoted I think. Book 2 is up there.

For me Books 2 - 7 are all pretty damn awesome. Some people who don't like the series as much think Books 5/6/7 are a little long winded but still very good (I recommend taking breaks in between some books if you aren't absolutely in love with it).

And then Book 11/12/14 are all typically mentioned as being really good with 13 also quite strong.

My general estimate as to how most people would rank them.

2/4/5/11/12/14 - Really good to great
3/6/13 - Good
1/7 - mediocre
8/9 - bad but with some redeeming parts
10 - shite

That is for people who like the series, clearly some movement between rankings - obviously there are plenty who quit after books 5/6 as they just don't like the writing style or don't like high fantasy, etc.

If you don't see the big attraction after book 2 and just find it kind of mediocre, you probably don't need to keep going.

He does have a lot of description and internal monologue throughout - but you will get lots of characters with great development as the story comes into its own more.

thank you. Thats good to know. If the next six are on par or better than book one, i'll be fine to keep going. But i'll definitely have to take a break in between some.

Fantasy is my jam so I might start The Broken Earth series at some point. I bought book one before I decided to start WoT. I had never heard of it until a google search and it sounded awesome.
