DEs

Do we have any big time DEs on the radar that we are trying to recruit? Our d-line pass rush is awful and Im not counting on Rodney Sopsher coming in and saving the day with his brother. Really missed Klavon Chiasson this season...

Our DE’s get turned into linebackers. Pressure in the 3-4 comes from the linebackers. Current scheme puts DT at DE and a NT is ideal.

I fully expect Jacoby to get a bunch of time as a pass rusher. He is great against the run also.He will be a monster next year.If Chasion can play at a high level after his injury I think we will be more effective pressuring the Qb.

I think our pass rush will have major improvements next year. We should return Lawerence, Fehoko, Alexander to ensure our run defense. Chassion will return from injury, Divinity will take steps forward, Jacoby looks like he’ll be a beast, and Marcel Brooks can be a great pass rusher off the edge as a hybrid OLB/Safety. Hopefully we see Jerrell Cherry some by next season. Pickering looks like he’s locked into Miss State, Issac looks like Penn State, Striping is trending towards OU. I can see us landing a big time OLB or DE from Juco.

Rushing OLBs are great, but we need more athletic DEs that can provide a more consistent pass rush. So far our DEs don’t do that. Likely because they are DTs than DEs speed wise. We can’t just rely on rushing our MLB, OLBs all the time. Have to get better in that area.

Boy imagine if we had both White, Divinty and Chassion mixed with a little of Delpit and Phillips sacking the QB. Why doesn't he send Phillips more?
I know he's more of a traditional mlb but you could still send him. He's a big dude. IMO this should be the focus of the entire offseason is finding different and perfecting different blitz packages that are extremly hard to pick up. I also don't see us ever stunting? Why don't we stunt like hell with these blitz packages, mixing LBs, DBs and DL? Would work IMO. Worked for A&M against us like a charm.
It's worked all year against us. Seems like it would work for us as well. Especially if they perfect it in the offseason and get really special with it along with stripping the ball and working as a team on defense.

In addition to this, O said he's gonna keep Queen outside and see what he's got.

I agree it’s the only concern I have had in our past couple recruting cycles is no true speed rusher off the edge. We need to land a couple of DE’s.

How many years does that Juco DE/OLB that we picked up last year still have remaining and can he now RS bc he was never physically ready IMO. He has burst and speed just not enough power to get through.
It can't be simply speed, you must have some power with that and in the SEC against good OTs it needs to be significant power/speed/moves/balance to be able to get around those guys. It can most certainly be done and we don't need the Mingo/Key/Chassion dudes every year to get this done. I see bigger DEs or OLBs in the 3/4 do it all the time. Actually it's preferred in the NFL to be bigger. Around 265 to 280 with quickness and agility mixed with great power.
IMO our defense and offense still needs some big time depth. We have some great starters it's the equal or better depth behind them that we lack. I think it's a matter of time really and not actually talent. It's very hard to find 1st and 2nd year guys who are ready to play at AA or ASEC levels. It usually takes them until their 3rd and 4th years.
I think once we have the 3rd and 4th year guys though, it's imperative to have those 1st and 2nd year elite talent right there behind them or another 3rd or 4th year guy who can take his place who has advantages of his own. Maybe not the same type of player but still does what he does at an elite level. That's why it's big to sign guys every year and never miss but talented players not just bodies who MIGHT develop.
We should also have bigger field OLBs who can tackle well but rush the inside along with our MLBs. Bring down a safety or rush a corner with the type of defense that can throw anyone at you and that's when you can disguise and really throw off even the best OLman. That's what we need or at the very least teach all of our front seven and secondary guys how to play in a blitzing aggressive style of defense together. It's all about playing as a team and knowing what the other guys job is then filling your role and not worry about his.
When they go into tackle a guy they need to all come at different angles and these angles should be taught by who comes first, second, third and so on. That way no one is ever confused on what they're doing as a team. Maybe we were just playing too many first timers out there the other night but they were confused as hell. Our darn depth players need to learn this stuff from the older guys man. Idk what they doing if they don't know the defense by the end of the year.

Travez Moore
Pretty sure he's eligible to red shirt.
Edit: just checked. Looks like he only played in 3 games (SLU, Florida & Georgia)

He’ll be a good one. As will Andre Anthony and Jarrell Cherry will start to come into his own.
We’ve got pass rushers they just need to develop. Divinity can also be a terror off the edge as well.
To add to that, just having a guy like what Chaisson is supposed to be out there just makes it so mych easier for everyone else to eat too
We’ll be much improved rushing the passer next year

The point youre making is true but the reason its not working isnt the one youre giving, not entirely.
We have guys that fit the mold of traditional DEs in a defense like ours. Logan, Farrell, the Thomas kid etc have the traditional size athleticism needed they just dont produce consistently like we need. Logan and Farrell in particular have impressed me at times but not consistently enough to brag about.
Lawrence, while a top notch guy imo, just isnt a great pasd rusher. Hes a guy thats gonna play the run well and move his blocker, sometimes the pocket as a pass rusher but just isnt elite as a pass rusher.
We need to develop them better or recruit better players or both. They arent in this class and we need a couple. Stripling isnt a guy im overly impressed with but hes better than what we have in the class now. Unless they have a plan theres no resladon not to push the Warren kid. Hopefully January allows us to find a couple of good ones.
