Make no mistake. The biggest issue facing O is his deep sense of insecurity. He is FULLY aware that this is his last and ONLY shot at being a power conf. HC. Frankly, he never thought he'd get another chance after Ole Miss and he wouldn't have until LSU threw him an unexpected life-line.

He doesn't want to hire someone, who he doesn't know, who he thinks might upstage him. Aranda is a perfect DC. He doesn't seek attention and seemingly has no burning desire to be a HC. Canada on the other hand had a clear desire to be an HC and frankly had no respect for O as a coach. I mean really, does O have any gravitas to be able to step in and start demanding things of his coordinators? If his coordinator(s) decided to say "go frick yourself" it's not as if O could step in and take over game planning/play calling duties. He's COMPLETELY reliant on the coordinators and they know it!

To that end, Ensminger is not seeking a HC job. He's not even really seeking a huge raise by trying to jump to a higher paying OC job. He was perfectly content to be the TE coach. That's the main reason O wanted him as OC...Steve is "safe" insofar as he is no threat to O's position. The irony is that O is so insecure that he refuses to acknowledge that HIS livelihood as LSU's HC is inextricably tied to his OC/DC. If the offense sucks, O's going to get the blame...even though he has absolutely nothing to do with game planning or play calling.

The best thing he could do is take the Dabo approach. Hire someone who could be an innovative OC (like Clemson did with Chad Morris); rely and handsomely pay your DC (which LSU does with Aranda) and humbly accept the unwarranted praise because your assistant coaches are knocking it out of the park.
