NCAA should not pay players; debate me:

My stance:
There are many roads for a player to take, some better than others. The NCAA is but one road. There is no reason for the NCAA to pay players, who have professional opportunities elsewhere. All opportunities do not need to be the same.
The fact is that players WANT to play in the NCAA. Its benefits are real and measurable. There is no logical reason for the NCAA to play players. That is why this is all pushed under a guise of "fairness."
There are multitude other reasons, ranging from Title IX, to affordability. The fact is, it won't happen. There are many colleges that would abandon sports (or the NCAA altogether) before that happened.

Agreed, but they should allow players to get paid.

There is no logical reason taxpayers should fund sports that function as the minor leagues for the NBA and the NFL.
Outside of that, funding for these students should be like how any department at a university funds graduate students. The better, richer programs can offer higher stipends.

Players are free to not join an NCAA school.

I'm fine with them not paying the players but why cant they get paid for signing autographs or things of that nature?

This.
Let Todd Gurley sell his autographs during the off-season. Why in the hell should the NCAA give a shite?
But no, schools should not write a check to student athletes.

Letting a player sign an autograph for $1000 wouldn't hurt the NCAA.

When school is free for all students you can pay players.
Scholarships are a form or payment. Room/board/food/tuition/under the counter payments etc.

This doesn't even come close to the revenue power 5 football teams bring in because of the players.

Fine. Do away with all scholarships and aid. Get what you can on the open market. About 1 percent of NCAA athletes have any market value.
Either be market based or aid based. The schools shouldn’t be stuck as a stop-gap funder.
For all the talk of how much money athletes make schools, nearly all of them are net takers. Their scholarship is worth more than they produce for the school.

This is the most egregious part. I understand the title ix bullshite and all that it effects. Whatever, don't pay them, I think most would be OK with that if they were able to profit off of their likeness.

Why even go through the charade? That allows boosters to pay fake values for jerseys and autographs.
Gurley can choose not to go to college. People act like there are no choices.

What's with this either/or bullshite?

Ok, but you are still absolutely fricking the ones that aren't. It's exactly the same thing as saying, you earned a merit scholarship because of your grades so we'll pay your tuition and R&B (which they do), but you aren't allowed to have a part time job at the boutique down the street.
It's a double standard for athletes.

Congratulations, now the girl who was fulfilling her dream playing college soccer while also getting a scholarship to school will no longer get that opportunity because a power-five, five-star DB wanted new shoes on top of his free education, free housing, free meal plan in a private cafeteria, free athletic gear, free books and weekly nationally televised audition for professional football.
As it should be

And that is the NCAA's business because? It's no different than a business owner paying their friends son $20 an hour to run the register at his business, which isn't against the rules for any other student.
