I listened to a new podcast this morning by Malcolm Gladwell ("Broken Record". well worth the listen btw) and damn i forget how much music Rubin has had a hand in. Its mind blowing. especially considering what a pioneer he was in hip hop

I also didnt know he was basically an early member of the Beastie Boys when he was 19 (he was their dj)

Heres the discog from wiki which has him listed for production credit. Buckle up..

He’s high on the list, but he’s been living off of his past legacy for quite some time now.

His rock/metal collaborations post-2004 have been pretty subpar.

Metallica’s Death Magnetic would be viewed much more favorably if not for the goddamn overcompression.

Very prolific. It would take a lot to top Sir George Martin, Glyn Johns, Mutt Lange or Quincy Jones, but Rubin is way, way up there.

And did it without a lot of drama, to be honest.

I'm kind of limiting this to primarily dedicated producers, rather than folks who focused heavily on their own work (e.g. Jimmy Page), but those who straddle that line, like Jeff Lynne, Dr. Dre and others would be in this conversation as well.

Rubin, although he has no real 70s chops (born 1963), like many of the others, has such a broad range of acts from almost every subgenre you can think of out of hip-hop, pop and rock and the sheer volume makes one head's swim.

On the other hand, he is one of the main culprits of dynamic range compression being foisted on us the past 20, 25 years, so we can hate him a little for that.

He helped the Beastie Boys become what they were by making Licensed to Ill a hit, but he was never a “member” of Beastie Boys. John Berry and Kate Schellenbach were the only other members besides the 3 everyone knows. John Berry left before they became a rap group and Rick Rubin made them kick out Kate Schellenbach because she was a girl. They split with Rubin because they hated how he changed them. Especially Yauch.

Later on the Beastie Boys tried to make it up to Kate Schellenbach by making her album with new band Luscious Jackson their first album on their new label Grand Royal in the 90s.

Interesting fact—Rubin was a big pro wrestling fan, and was the main investor/money guy for Jim Cornette’s Smokey Mountain Wresting.

With a few exceptions, Rubin's albums sound a bit too "dry" for my liking.

I've also heard he doesn't contribute much during the creative process like other prolific producers do, and his involvement is pretty much limited to tinkering with the finished songs, for whatever that's worth...

He's a different cat. My Dad worked with an act that used him about 5 years ago. Let's just say Rick gets compensated handsomely for his work.
