Go for it. Your friends are fools. Paris is much safer than anywhere in Louisiana. Or anywhere else in the States.
The irony is that they suggested a trip to Chicago instead lol.

Book direct with whatever airline hits your pricing point. If you check Google Flights, you'll see that RT prices from MSY with Friday departures can be as low as $672 during Jan/Feb.
I'd choose a route that flies through DC/Dulles over O'Hare/Chicago, Montreal or Newark, simply because weather delays are less likely thru IAD.

I went to Europe after college. Did a portion with my now wife, a portion alone, and a portion with my best buddy. I did Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Budapest alone. Had an awesome time in all of them. Stayed in Hostels and met some great people. Ate dinner at a place in Barcelona with an older couple from Australia. They took good care of me and still comment on my facebook pictures haha.

A few weeks ago I got round trip MSY/CDG for $550.00 through Expedia for next April.

My piece of advice is to fly into Brussels. CDG is a nightmare of an airport and there is a train into Paris that leaves from the Brussels airport. From wheels down in Paris to downtown Paris is actually quicker from Brussels than the Paris airport.

Would you recommend hostels or hotels? I was looking to stay somewhere in arrondissements 1-7. Any hotel or hostel recs? Thanks

I would consider some Airbnbs also. Don't know about that area at all. But you can likely find some Airbnbs for $75/ night or less for one person.
Nothing wrong with a hostel at all either, especially going solo. Just depends on how well you sleep and mind being around others. Many have private or small rooms now though.

I'm in Paris right now. A lot of beautiful women and great food and cultural experiences. Contrary to what some may say, the people have even been very friendly, and my French is horrible.
Don't listen to your friends.

After arriving, we looked into bus tours out of Paris and ended up booking one to Normandy and WWII areas. It was a full day, starting very early, but had some of the most memorable experiences. Went to the museum in Caen, La Pointe du Hoc, the American Cemetery, etc.
We did another bus day-trip to Monet's home and gardens. That was also excellent.
I would go there by myself in a heartbeat. I can cover a lot more ground when traveling solo, and can go see odd stuff that others might not want to visit.

Do you have the name of the company you took the normandy bus tour with? Thats exactly something I would like to do.
