I dropped my pawpaw's machete from the Korean War into a bayou when I was young and stupid. He died, and it was one of the only things my dad had from him. We both searched for a couple of hours, and couldn't find it. Gave up, and he was feeling bad for a couple of days.

The next weekend, a buddy and I spent about 8hrs looking for it, and finally found it under 4ft of water and a foot of mud and leaves. He was happy enough to almost shed a tear, and I never got to borrow it again

Ah jeez, my father in law is dying of cancer, my dad is healthy but gettin old, and you guys all have my eyes leaking here. Life is way too short.

Adventures instead of gifts is a great idea. Also, OP, try to find out what his favorite toy was when he was a kid and then try to find one for him. Mine would love that.
