I recently moved and put my Tivo Bolt and minis in storage (was using a OTA setup). Things were hectic when I moved so I just decided to let Cox install Contour boxes (one 2 DVR, 2 others in bedrooms) to save myself the possible headache of dealing with the cablecard. I really don't like the Contour boxes (interface, slowness, etc). The only thing I like is the backlit remote.

So I'm thinking about getting a cable card for the Tivo bolt. I posted a similar question a couple years ago before I bought the Tivo and several people mention that it worked fine, but the setup is pain in the arse with Cox. Does anyone here have any feedback on the current Tivo/Cablecard setup? I assume my biggest downside is I'm losing On-Demand and pay per view. But I still have my firetv setup and i prefer it over the contour boxes anyway for movie rental and ondemand apps.

I didn't use a TiVo, but I did have e it set up with a Samsung cablecard box.
You call for a cablecard, they have to give it to you at a "reasonable" price ($2.50-5/m usually).
In baton rouge, it required a tuning adapter which they have to provide free of charge, if necessary.

Getting it paired takes some time on the phone. It wasn't that bad. TiVo is probably the easiest device to pair (because Cox is familiar with TiVo. If you have any other device, it's probably best to just say, "it's a TiVo...")

I had a bolt w/ two minis and a Cox Card. It was a year or so back. From my memory, the setup was a little painful, but not bad. I had to have the tuning adapter as well. Seemed like the tuning adapter and the cable card was a little wonky. I ended up leaving Cox because of it. I couldn't get the channels I was paying for reliably and Cox wanted me to pay for a service tech to come to the house. Told them to shove it and got direct TV.

I miss directv. The genie and remote I had were fast and responsive. The menu layout and everything else is superior in my opinion when compared to the Cox Contour box. I'm living in a rental and I don't want to sign a contract with directv to get it installed for a place I won't be living next year.

The Cox Contour box drives me nuts because there is a couple seconds delay when pressing buttons and I'm constantly having to cancel something or I'm tuning to the wrong channel, etc.

Tivo Bolt OTA is much, much faster than the contour box. As long as the Cablecard doesnt slow down the tivo too bad, it will be an improvement over Cox's crappy boxes.

I had Windows Media Center plus a cablecard for about 4 years. The tuning Adapter would drop out sometimes, and i did have to replace it once. Other than that it was a fairly solid setup; offering 4 tuners plus infinitely expandable storage.

Running two Tivo bolts and a HD Homerun Prime on Cox.

The phone set up takes a while but fairly painless.

There is an on demand app that Cox can push to the Tivo. Isn't as seamless as on contour, but works most of the time to watch on demand content.

I have cox and use a cable card with hdhomerun prime. They actually came out to install it for free for me. They struggled because they had never done it before, but once we got into the settings.. they had all the information they needed to activate it with the cable card department.

I use it to record/dvr to my pc/plex

I'm running the older Tivo model with a cable card. I've had that setup since 2015. Don't remember the setup being difficult.

I also put in a MoCa and Roamio. Little more hassle but not bad.

I don't anymore but I used to years ago. I was actually astounded at how easy the whole process was compared to all the cablecard nightmare stories I heard. I literally called the number on the paper provided with the cablecard, and it was a direct line number to someone who just asked for a number and boom it worked.

Just to update... I ordered the CableCARD and it arrived the following day. The Cox portion of the setup took two phone calls that were each about 10-15 minutes long. The second call wouldn't have been necessary except they had a mixup and forgot to link the tuning adapter to my account. My Tivo Bolt was still setup for OTA. To change that to the cablecard, I had to go thru the guided setup again which was the longest part of my setup. My process was like this..

1- (10 minutes) installed hardware per easy to follow instructions.
2- (15 minutes) online activation was down so I called the '877' number and was quickly connected to someone that knew how to set it up. I gave her a bunch of numbers and she said it was working, but I had to change some settings on my Tivo to convert from OTA to cable.
3- (30-40 minutes) I went through the Tivo Guided setup and let the box install an update
4- (10 minutes) No channels were authorized. I called cox and they connected the tuning adapter to my account and everything worked perfectly after a tivo restart.

All in all, I am very satisfied. Tivo's speed and interface are significantly better than Contour. I plan to return the $28/month worth of Cox boxes and only pay the $3 for the cablecard rental. Only downside I've found so far is the ondemand app isn't working, but I haven't put much effort into it yet.

Are you in Baton Rouge? I can't get the app to work. According to Tivo's site Cox's on demand isn't available for Tivo in BR.
