Even then it's spotty. I fish all around Lake DeCade and Mechant and there are plenty of spots where I lose signal.
You'd have to be pretty dumb to go out with just a cell phone. What about when you need a bridge opened... you gonna keep them all on speed dial?

Satellite phones for the win Alex

People get bogged down on shite that the OP isn't even asking for.
*Always bring more safety gear than you need. Handheld VHF are around $100-$150. I think that money is worth my piece of mind if I needed assistance in a bad situation. Also, aren't VHF required by Coast Guard?

I have done multiple cruises in the Bahamas, Belize, and etc.. I have had to make cell phone calls for work and never have had an issue while at sea.
wtf...
You go like 10 miles out of Orange Beach and you have no signal at all. Much less being out like 90 miles... completely screwed

Even if you know what number to dial, its going to suck being on a sinking boat and get a busy signal.

Every time I've used a sat phone, I want to smash it

Disagree completely. If I’m fishing within 2 miles of land all I worry about is my phone if I’m fishing an area with service which is most of the lower 48 bodies of water. A marine portable radio is just one more unreliable thing to need batteries and that corrosion gets to. It’s one more thing to make ‘handy’ in case of an emergency and store somewhere. Keep your phone battery charged and accessible and that’s all you really need.
I’m not saying portable vhf is a bad idea at all I’m just saying I don’t think it’s necessary.

your cell phone range is limited to the nearest land based cell tower
vhs marine radios are good over very long distances and ship to ship connections including a dedicated 24/7 coast guard monitored emergency channel
your cell phone is just good as an added backup insurance communication device

No. Especially a small VHF antenna that you'd mount on a personal pleasure/fishing boat

This needs to be deleted out of shear stupidity.

What happens when your boat sinks with the marine radio screwed into it?
We have a floating handheld as backup, costs 75 bucks.
At least the Coast Guard will know where we went down when I hit the red distress button.
Anyone whom has ever been in an emergency boat situation isn't relying on a cell phone.

A VHF radio works on line of site to the tip of the antenna. So if you are standing in your boat the effective range for a handheld is about 3 miles. If you are floating in the water, the effective range is probably a mile or less. If the CG is that close, all you need is a bull horn.
For bay boats, a dash mount VHF radio with an 8ft whip antenna mounted as high as possible on your boat will give you a range of 5 to 8 miles, sometimes a little better depending on the receiving radios position.

I think anyone spending time offshore, or hiking in the back country should invest in a personal locator beacon. Most are under $300.00 and work worldwide using a satellite network. Some have capability to send and receive text messages if you subscribe to the service, for just signaling that emergency help is needed and transmitting your position no subscription service is needed.

What’s the number you dial for “PON PON”?
I read somewhere that the coast guard gets pissed when people buy them at garage sales and use them as a pool toy
