Bush wrote in his diary that night that they thought it was Bin Laden. They knew pretty much when it happened who it was.

Al Qeada wasn’t a household name to every American in 2001 but Bin Laden was after the embassy and USS Cole bombings in 1998 and 2000.

Right. Those who were experts in the terrorism area had a likely suspect. But it was not 100% confirmed.

I also remember, days after 9/11, the news reports coming out about Bin Laden telling people to turn on the radio and get ready for some big news coming out of America. And they pieced together that Mohamed Atta had been with Bin Laden.

But on 9/12/2001, there was not enough solid information to direct a response. Just several days of live broadcasts from Ground Zero and Washington.
