The bridge you speak of was part of the TIMED program passed by the legislature and voted on by the people. It was paid for by a 4 cent gas tax.
"The TIMED (Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development) Program was a $5.2 billion transportation infrastructure program designed to increase economic development in Louisiana by investing in transportation improvement projects. The program began in 1989 when voters approved a 4¢/gallon tax on gasoline to fund the projects designated by Act 16 of the 1989 Louisiana legislature. The TIMED program included widening over 500 miles of state highways to four lanes on 11 project corridors, widening and/or new construction on three major bridges, and improvements to both the Port of New Orleans and Louis Armstrong International Airport."

The bridge saves us more money in maintenance than a ferry and it's not even close.
Larger upfront cost>larger cost overtime

Because it makes total sense to not have a bridge between BR and Natchez, or because it's so much easier to drop a bridge between BR and Donaldsonville?

Maybe the voters and politicians who voted for that bridge should be blamed? Oh wait, it was all the same people complaining today. Gotcha. Or maybe it is the 1500 people in WBR who in 2007 signed a petition to kill a potential new bridge in favor of keeping Cinclaire Sugar, oh wait, its the same people. Or maybe it is the Perkins Road overpass community and Washington St. community and their elected officials that have killed the proposed projects that would address congestion for the last 40 years, oh wait, it is the same people.

The problem in La. is we don't have comprehensive plans to build up our infrastructure. Plans to finance and plans in where to build roads and bridges.
Look at the Sunshine Bridge for example. It was opened in 1963, but it still isn't integrated into the interstate system in the East bank and it's 45 years later. Reality it should connect directly to I10 with an interchange and four lanes and continue east to Airline Hwy.
Look at the New Roads bridge, it should be four lanes to US 61 on the east side and four lanes to 190 on the west side to make it more accessible.
The failure to build a comprehensive plan to take full advantages of key bridges has really hurt the state.

Damn. Both directions too. That is way worse then I remember it. I'd still take that over freakin SoCal traffic.
