The convictions had NOTHING to do with Trump,

except that he's ON TAPE discussing the payoffs (that he at first said he didn't know about, then he said he knew about them but later, etc) that Cohen pleaded guilty to making....

you can spin a lot of shite, but that's hard for even the staunchest Trump supporter to get out of how Trump, clearly audible on the tape, is sitting there discussing the form of payment for the payoffs that Cohen was discussing with him...

at this point, Trump better hope beyond hope that he is re-elected, because the statute of limitations for the charge that he's now an alleged co-conspirator on, the one that Cohen willingly pled guilty to, is 5 years... and that happened in 2016, so he can be prosecuted for it up to 2021... that's why, even though he's fully protected from indictment, right now as president, he won't tell the truth about the timing and payment, even though there is evidence that directly conflicts with his multiple stories...

I saw a lot of legal chatter that the punishment is usually a fine? 5 years seems like a ridiculously harsh punishment for something like this.

I have never heard of someone going to jail for five years for FEC violations.

Which only violates campaign finance law if the payments were made to influence an election, Trump could have simply made the payments to prevent his wife from finding about the women which was the defense John Edwards successfully used when charged with the same thing. As Lanny Davis himself said all we are left with here is what Cohen said vs what Trump said, without any other evidence to differentiate that the payments were specifically for the campaign it is game, set, match, for Trump once again.
