Why do hospitals make it so hard to rest after surgery?

I don’t get it. My 68yr old mother had heart surgery 12 hours ago. It’s after 11pm and the 20-something yr old night nurses are cackling like witches at the nurses station, some lady wanted to empty the trash twice in the last hour, another lady opened the door like Kramer from Sienfeld, and I swear to God, just to see if he board had dry erase markers. And last but not least, they have slammed the closet door with the sheets in the hallway at least 10 times. I walked up to the group and asked politely to remember that it’s almost midnight to most of the patients and all of them need their rest. They just looked at me. My mom has been in and out of hospitals for about 5 years now and it’s like this at every one of them. You get decent nurses from time to time but for the most part this industry has some shitty people that are responsible for the aftercare of major surgeries.

They want it to be unpleasant so you will want to get discharged
You would be surprised at the number of people who dont mind being in hospitals. They like the attention

Hospitals are not hotels. Many times the nurses are required to get vitals or labs throughout the night. It’s unfortunate and uncomfortable but I promise, everyone there is working to get the patients out as quick as possible—hospitals are a great place to get sick. Then again, some of those nurses suck and don’t care.

I'm sure telling nurses how to do their job is going to work out well for your mother.

Was in hospital with GF.
Her CO2 monitor was malfunctioning. It kept going off despite her being fine.
Of course the stupid arse nurses didn't know how to fix it. They just were like "oh it's not working".

Getting vitals is one thing. Taking a head count of dry erase makers at 11pm is asinine. I asked her nurse to please limit the room visits to necessity only and she said of course. She’s been great actually. Really attentive and respectful of the situation. Just have some professionalism and self awareness to realize you work in an environment where most people aren’t having the best of days. I don’t want to hear if Caleb took you bowling Saturday. (He did btw. He also bought her flowers. Pretty sure Caleb is about to bag him a nurse. )

I didn’t tell them how to do their job. I asked them to be respectful.

This is why they should have visiting hours. Why are you still there bothering people. Go home.

I’m here with my widowed mother dipshit. “Sleeping” on this sweet pull out chair-bed that was probably really nice 10 years ago.

They just came in and checked my vitals. I’m good.

Agree with everything you said. A few years ago I was at West Jefferson for 2 nights after a spinal fusion and it was rough. Sounded like a full on keg party in the halls at all hours. The lack of sleep from those twits was worse than the pain from the procedure.

Massive pet peeve of mine. Probably it’s from growing up in a two story house with all hard floors and a father who works shift work, but I can’t close a cabinet or drawer without pressing my finger between it to mute the noise to this day.
How people have zero awareness of their surroundings blows my mind.
Sorry you have to deal with turds. I hope your mom recovers quickly.

The labor pool in Louisiana is horrendous. There are absolutely good nurses out there, but the majority are quite trashy.

The Pierremont campus of Willis-Knighton in Shreveport is pretty good about that. It's fairly recently renovated and the layout keeps noise to a minimum. And they only come in and hassle you once or twice at night.
