My wife told me today that my backpack looked a little too "kiddish," and she wants to get me a briefcase as a birthday present.

What direction should I point her? FWIW, I don't care either way, but I see her point. I'm in a management position in construction and do have a fair amount of round table talks. The backpack is super handy, but it does give off a certain vibe at times. I'll still use it, but might bust out a briefcase when the environment becomes a little more formal.

I don't want her to break the bank, but I'd prefer it be something that holds up for a while. I'd be carrying a SurfacePro and maybe a couple sets of specs and plans (11"x17") in it any given day. I'm hoping to keep her under $200.

Who uses a briefcase anymore, especially in construction?

I worked in financial turnarounds for a while and even the older heavy hitters carried backpacks.

Stick with your backpack.

Don’t listen to all the OT haters. I got into a really nice leather briefcase a couple of years back only because it was a gift from a greatful client for whom I did some off the clock work. I would never have bought it myself but it was noticed by others literally from the day I started using it. It is with me every day now. The older it gets, the better it looks. Frankly, it is one of those things I think sets a man apart from a boy. Don’t be cheap, spend a bit more and get something you can keep for the long haul.

I’m a lawyer and carry one everyday with all my files calender legal pads MacBook Pro etc in. I carry a Kattee 15.6 inch briefcase (amazon search it). It’s been great. A clasp broke on it about a year after I bought it. Emailed the company and they sent me two replacements that I got in about a week. Solid leather.

Saddleback is really nice but no where near his price range.

Thanks for the legit recs. However, the my little pony bag really has me torn.

That thing is just fantastic. Function and style. Gonna be a tough decision.
