Moderately Priced French Laundry Alternatives

I'm finally going to French Laundry next week. My husband doesn't get it but he's indulging me. Anytime we meet people from the area when we travel, he always asks, what do you think about French Laundry, and those people always give recommendations of places they feel you can get just as good for less $$$. Unfortunately, I've never written any of these suggestions down except Auberge. He really would like to go somewhere for comparison. So where would you suggest?

If you are just talking about putting sustenance in your stomach, there are certainly places you can go. And even fantastic meals. But the French Laundry is a special place. Auberge is probably just as expensive. There are other 3 star places like Meadowood, and plenty in San Fran. But not sure you will really save money eating there.
Other favorites in that general area of the world.
Redd
The Girl and the Fig
Bouchon
Bouchon Bakery
Last two been to other outposts and always had good meals.

Came here to post this.
But if you're going to FL anyway, why do you need the alternatives? Just curious.

Admittedly I have never been to French Laundry so I dont know what kind of magic happens in there, but I loved a couple of spots in Yountville. Bistro Jeanty and Bouchon, both in Yountville were really really good.
Also, I hear a really high-end place is the dining table at the Culinary Institute in St Helena.

Because my husband wants to say, see, it wasn't worth the $$$ when X place was just as good.

I see. Makes perfect sense.
FWIW, he'll end up being wrong.

My favorite meals usually come more for the shadows of society
some little cajun ladies shack
some sketchy arse taco shop near juarez
etc etc
the fancy items and eclectic mixes at places like FL arent really my fancy.

That’s because you have no class.
FL was rated the best restaurant in the world before.

Well I can't speak for the OP but I specifically started a thread to brag about getting my reservation to Osteria Francescana a couple months ago.

I simply dont enjoy their style of dining like I do other simpler dishes
To each their own

Yeah when someone asks for an alternative to the FL, I know my first thought is definitely a place like suire’s.
As for OP, Bouchon bistro is also Thomas Keller and lesser priced. It’s pretty much exactly what you’re looking for.

Oh okay so you’re admitting it served no purpose.

I see Bouchon and TFL as totally different styles of food and restaurants. While both are Keller establishments and have that Keller attention to detail, TFL is really a California expression of American food through the eyes of a multi course Michelin experience and Bouchon is a really well done version of the platonic ideal of a French Bistro.
Now I do think you can probably get the Keller experience at Bouchon or Ad Hoc without paying the tariff of TFL.
Did you secure the OF reservation?

The secondary purpose of this thread was to see if her husband would be proven right
Abita said he would be proven wrong
I said not neccessarily
You are being extra c.u.n.t.y this thursday
