Pat Conroy tops my list. Aspires to be Faulkner; comes off as whiney.

Not "modern" as in "current," but modern as in time period, I'd say Hemingway, Salinger, and Vonnegut.
All are snoozetown.

I love Hemingway but I find it hard to believe modern day publishing houses would go for his style.

I can go with that.

Beach Music made me want to slit my wrists, and not because of anything particularly sad or depressing imparted in the book--just the reading experience overall.

I liked others of his ok.

Not overrated but I’m 200 pages into “Poland” and Michener is not my favorite.

I love Hemingway as well, but I was pretty let down by his simple simple style. His writing is good. It is not pretty.

ETA: I’ll throw King in the mix. Big bag of meh for me.

He may or may not be a good author but I have no desire to read him again, ever. His sensitive protagonist schtick gets really tedious. It's pretty obvious he was bullied as a kid.

One of the greatest storytellers, but yeah he lacks a lot as a novelist. I think even he would admit that.

I have enjoyed what I read of Conroy.

Lords of Discipline was excellent.
Beach Music was good.
Prince of Tides was ok.

My immediate thought

This is an apt description. He’s amazing at building characters and compelling stories, but very hit or miss on where that leads.

Speaking of Conroe, I laughed my arse off watching movie version of Prince of Tides with Nolte and Streisand.

“ Lowenstein, Lowenstein” just awful but cracked me up.

I recommend that people check out John Connolly. He’s in the brutal, hard boiled detective genre, but with thriller elements.
