JJ Redick: There's a double standard for white GMs and owners compared to black athletes

On the most recent episode of The JJ Redick Podcast, the 76ers shooting guard was answering a mailbag question about DeMar DeRozan being traded to the Spurs against his will.

"This is why I love what Kevin Durant did in going to Golden State. You should look at your career as sort of squeezing out every ounce of money, joy, winning, team -- whatever it is you prioritize -- squeeze that out," Redick explained.

"There is so much you can't control. When you have an opportunity to do what you actually want to do, you have to take it."

Redick also explained why he believes there is a racial component when it comes to players leaving in free agency.

"When a player, and a lot of professional athletes are African-American in football and basketball, tries to sort of enact control on his career -- Kevin Durant goes to the Warriors -- there's a lot of backlash," Redick said. "When white owners and white GMs, primarily, when they make a trade that they deem in the best interest of their organization, they don't receive that same backlash. Why is that?"

Redick laughed after he asked the question, implying that the reasoning is obvious.

He then continued:

"Every time there's a work stoppage in any sport, the overwhelming majority of fans are upset at the African-American athletes and not the rich, white owners who are squeezing every last dollar they can -- who are already profitable and are already rich.

"Again, there's a racial component to this."

Most fans are fans of the team not the players. They see what’s good for their team and not for players. It is pretty easy JJ.

That's not entirely true. Especially when it comes to the NBA.

People are fans of LeBron etc, however, I would say you have more fans of a particular team than players still in this day and age.

I'd be willing to guess that he's more in tune to it than you are. Especially since he spends the majority of his time with them and/or hearing their opinion on the matter.

Hence why he said "most" and I'm willing the best it's a large majority that root for team over player

Who the frick roots for a player?

Gordon Hayward got his fair share of outrage for doing what was best for him in FA.

Not saying Redick is completely wrong, but it's not that black and white. Pun intended.

I'd say my generation and the one behind mine are more willing to follow individuals than teams (Especially if you grow up in an area that doesn't have an NBA franchise). That being said, teams like the Knicks or Lakers will always have their team first following i think.

I rooted for Shaq when he was in Orlando,LA and Miami. I've done the same thing with some CFB players that I liked. It's not that weird of a concept to follow.

I don’t think there’s necessarily a racial component to it as much as there is a player vs. owner component. Have and have nots when it comes to control I guess?

I’ll also say, Toronto ownership has gotten a good amount of backlash from the DeRozan trade in the court of public opinion.

He dumb

MLB have 10x more control of players. NHL did also, up until the last contract. You couldn't become a free agent in hockey till age 27?

He's really wanting some of the BBC on the downlow.

It will be very interesting to follow how they attempt to keep Kawhi around after this season.

Exactly. JJ doesn’t have a point here.
