Expect about 90 boats to be entered and lots of tower boats to be buzzing around looking for fish starting this weekend. 3/4 of the field will fish within 30 miles of Falgout with the rest headed way east.

If you have never fished a redfish tourney before other than local rodeos expect to be a little intimidated. Most of the guys in this have been doing it for years and many are also guides.

Go do your thing and have fun, strike up conversations with strangers at the dock, 99% are good guys that love to talk fishing... but don't ask where they went or what they caught em on...

Thanks,

I’ve been watching some of the YouTube videos of past tournaments and how these guys go out and catch 17 plus pounds for two fish under 27 inches is amazing. Like you suggested just going to have fun and hopefully learn a little fro the guys there.

One tactical suggestion for you.

Get a check-it board and buy one of their tail pinchers at the captains meeting Friday night.

Its important to measure your fish using the same equipment and method as the bump man. 1/8 inch can be the difference in winning and not even cutting a check.

Side note, keeping 2 upper slot reds alive all day in this heat is going to take some babby sitting of your fish. A dead fish is a 0.5 lb penalty. 2 dead fish is a 2 lb penalty.

Good luck

Better hope that water comes back up. Its like a low winter tide out there right now.

I used to fish around there in my little Ranger Banshee. I remember launching at Falgout on the final day when they had moved the launch for that day up into Houma somewhere. So we had a significant head start. By the time we reached the other end of Lake Decade, they are already blowing by us....haha. Guess that's the difference between a 60hp and a 250hp+

I was planning on bringing some ice packs to help keep the water at a less than boiling point temperature

thanks again for all the suggestions, I am heading down this weekend to see if I can find some decent size fish.

I dont lknow if I have ever seen it this low in the summertime. I started spinning up mud last weekend in a river that I had never considered to be close to shallow.

Bring two gallon size bags. Don’t fill your live well at the launch. Wait till you get to your first fishing spot. After filling with ice, add your bags of ice to the well. Should melt quick. Pitch the water in the bags and add more ice. I usually repeat 3 times. Then check the water. Should be cool. That should hold you over all day if you cooled it enough. Soon as you catch your first weighable fish, add rejuvenate to the livewell. One cap full is enough.

Whenever we buy bulk bottled water I keep the bottles, fill with water, then freeze. I bring the frozen waters and use instead of buying ice for drinks, or place in livewell to cool bait or fish.

Same idea except skipping buying ice part

I also do not add water as the day goes. I add it on the run out, usually in the largest body of water I cross, and shut it off. There is a solution at aquarium stores called Prime that I buy. It drops the ammonia and chlorine out of the water. Free ammonia is very toxic to fish. I also run a pure O2 system with micro diffusers, it saturates the water and can be a game changer in the heat.

Weighed in a 6.5 and a 4.5. Finished 61st out of 101 boats. Not bad for a weekend warrior fishing against pros. But had a blast getting ready for the tournament. The boats these guys fish in a amazing. My Skeeter doesn’t compare. Blast off Saturday morning with over 100 boats, 90% with 10 foot towers was a sight. Driving down Falgout canal at 40 mph and get passed like I am standing still by some 20 foot flats boats that are dancing on the surface. Don’t know where the winners fished but they were over 18 pounds. Thanks again for the advice about keeping the livewell water cool. It helped.

Yeah... and why I mentioned it can be intimidating.

Glad the cool water helped you. Keeping upper slot reds alive all day in August can be a challenge, reds under 25 inches seem to be easier. It took me a couple years to get my own technique down.

Winners went west.
