He’s obviously a good ballplayer, but he is going to get paid all time great money. Is he an all-time great?

Of course not but it won't matter. Some team will back up the Brinks truck to sign him this off-season.

It's not really much of a down season though. He's on pace to have his third 1 WAR season in the last five years. Harper is what he is which is a very inconsistent player.

I was looking at his career stats. I'd hate to be paying him 30mil+ per year for his down seasons, and he has them and they aren't superstar caliber.

.243
.319
.218 his last 3 years batting average. He averages .278 for his career.

You can find a RF who can put up .260-.270 20-30hr. That's sort of who he is.

17 RF who had 20 or more Homers, 9 in that .260-270 region

they are out there, and they dont cost 30mil+ per year

He has a career wRC+ of 139. And he started playing at an age when most players would be in college or A-ball.

I can think of seven players in his age group who are better than him. Trout, Betts, Bryant, Lindor, Arenado, Machado, and Jose Ramirez. You know players who are more durable, more consistent offensively, and are better fielders at more premium defensive positions.

Career WAR

Bryce Harper 28.8
Machado 27.8
Mookie Betts 26.7
Arenado 23.8
Kris Bryant 22.9
Lindor 21.1
Jose Ramirez 20.0

Interesting take. Someone who isn't durable, not consistent offensively, and isn't a good fielder somehow accumulates more WAR than anyone on your list not named Trout

WAR Last Four Seasons which includes Harper's historically great 2015 season

Fangraphs WAR

Trout- 32.4
Betts- 24.9
Bryant- 22.9
Lindor- 21.1
Arenado- 19.4
Machado- 19.3
Ramirez- 18.8
Harper- 18.7

rWAR (Baseball Reference WAR)

Trout- 33.5
Betts- 28.6
Arenado- 23.7
Lindor- 22.0
Bryant- 21.5
Machado- 20.6
Ramirez- 19.3
Harper- 16.4

Harper is dead last among both groups even though I included his 10 WAR 2015 season. If it was just from the last three seasons, he would be dead last by an even bigger margin.

All eight of those players are great, even if you are the worst one of the group, you are still great. And I'm not sure Harper is the worst of that group.

Not wasting time arguing his rank amongst his peers, just wanna say I'm glad my team isn't the one that will surely overpay him.
