Let’s say the tariffs work and US manufacturing booms

I’ll preface this by saying I support Trump’s tariffs on countries that tariff our products. Also, I support strongarming China into stopping their jackassery.

But...let’s say all these countries capitulate and US manufacturing booms and thousands of new jobs are created. We’re pretty much at our carrying capacity now from a numbers standpoint, and there are a lot of companies having trouble finding folks with skills and/or who can simply pass a drug test.

In my town there is a manufacturing plant that has over 100 openings which start at $15/hr. They’re having a terrible time finding folks who can simply piss clean.

How does this scenario play out?

Come up with a test for "high at work" instead of "smoked weed in the last 30 days."

Start hiring the entry level kids straight out of high school, some of them still piss clean and will work. It's a good problem to have.

The country’s gonna need to have a come to jesus talk about our drug problems soon. We have jobs open. Just about anyone who doesn’t have one for more than a month doesn’t want one.

Let illegals work. They are better than spoiled Americans anyway.

The last 16 job openings at our business, 10 flunked the drug test and 4 quit high school. It's hard getting good people to hire, REAL hard.

I wouldn’t let illegals work, but would support a better temp worker program.

That would require testing every day.
That’s a bit cost prohibitive now, but mouth saliva tests may be the answer.

THIS ^^^

My company location has had two positions we can't fill since February because no applicants can piss clean. Small isolated town of 2500ish, for reference. $13/hr starting wage, warehouse type positions.

They're not failing UAs for weed either... failing for pills and meth. My boss has quite literally started telling people before the face to face interviews, "Don't waste my time or yours if you aren't going to piss clean". And therefore, he has had 20+ phone calls and absolutely zero in-person interviews since May.

Probably 30% of US adults are unemployable for any length of time.

Weed shouldn’t be on the test. If we want to MAGA then make it legal. It’s insane to prohibit and police the use of such a common and harmless thing. Just like prohibition, it created more problems than it solved. America needs to wake up.

Agree with you here. It's a huge waste of jail space and law enforcement resources.

That’s about exactly where I would put that percentage.

I'm sure that's impossible due to insurability and probably a violation of OSHA. You really want some stoned jackass working in a foundry or mill?

The only answer is to start cutting entitlements such as welfare, food stamps, etc.

The sad part is that the folks at the top couldn’t pass a piss test either, they are just lucky they rarely have to take them. Everyone smokes weed.

The funny thing about that is; there’s a juco/trade school in our town that has a manufacturing robotics program. It’s apparently great and the students are hired by Nissan (headquarters in Nashville) by the time their last semrster starts. It all sounds great, but the head of the dept says half of the kids/students are kicked out due to the 3-days per semester absence rule.

Isn’t it ultimately the insurance companies that force drug testing in the manufacturing sector? Liability and such.

No but I don’t want a guy that’s been drinking in there either. We don’t ban alcohol.

What does food stamps have to do with anything? That’s a bizarre shift in topic.
