Sorry can’t figure out how to post a pic. This site sucks for that!

Link goes to imgur.

My guess is Banded Water Snake.

Bro, that looks like a copperhead to me. Definitely has a triangular head.

I agree. Not a copperhead or a cottonmouth. You can see the vertical bands on the lower jaw. Neither copperheads or moccasins have that feature.

100% water snake.
I’m going with northern, though if it were in south La. I’d call it a banded.

We saw another one swimming.

Sorry the pic didn’t show it but it did not have a triangular head.

Small round head. Skinny body. Round eyes.
Bands are wide on the top not on the side.

Awesome pics. And thanks Rize for posting mine.

I was really excited to see these snakes today and be able to rationally watch them and try to identify without getting freaked out.

Owe it all to the OB!

I agree with water snake, probably a Northern Water Snake in that region.

I was backpacking in TN 2 Octobers ago and stepped directly on a fairly large copperhead that blended perfectly into the leaves. It didn’t even think about striking. I picked it up with my hiking stick and moved it well off the trail on onto a big rock to sun.

My experiences with copperheads is that they’re pretty chill. The little ones seem much more apt to strike.

It was likely chill because it was October and cooler. Cooler temps make every snake chill. Don’t assume that to be the norm.
