But assuming we are debating this in the light of today’s political reality in which we are committed to defending Europe from some hypothetical Russian attack...theoretically, wouldn’t the Europeans having the capability to defend themselves(or at least defend themselves better than they can now) allow us to not commit as much to the defense of Europe?

I don't think so, because the pressure to spend is coming from more than just NATO. there are numerous internal and external forces on the spending habits of the US, and we need a significant internal force to fight it.

Also, i think cutting our budget would be more likely to spur NATO budget increases than NATO increasing their would be to decrease ours.
