Hmm, sounds like the kind of thing one could easily google before going on a rant...

Contributions are based on a formula that considers the Gross National Income of each member nation. We pay ~22% of NATO's budget. Germany pays ~14.7. Our GDP is $18.57 Trillion. Germany's is $3.47 Trillion. So, we pay 1.5 times as much into NATO as Germany, meanwhile our GDP is over 5 times greater than Germany's (the GNI ratio is also > 5).
Semantics indeed!

And maybe you could go back and read the whole thread with some comprehension being used.
Yeah, semantics grasshopper.

We spend almost 5% currently. We could just allow the percentage to decrease without spending less money, or increasing spending

It isn’t semantics. The issue of overhead funding for NATO operations is an entirely different issue than Trump’s statement about member states spending 2% of their GDP on their own military budgets. These are entirely, 100% different issues.
And note this. Trump did not suggest that any NATO member has failed to pay its share of operations overhead. He never said it. No one has said that. So y’all trying to talk about operations overhead expense sharing are talking about something that is not part of Trump’s discussion or complaint.
It isn’t semantics. The issues are completely different.

Do we or do we not give money to NATO? Before you answer, read this:
quote:
NATO has common military expenses on the order of $2 billion a year. The U.S. share of that is about 22 percent.
Now you can answer.

I have no clue what you are talking about. This isn’t a policy debate. It is a bunch of ignorant and uninformed people airing fantasy grievances about other member NATO states not “paying in to NATO” and the U.S. having to cover their bills.
I’m just trying to help people understand the truth of the matter.

Jesus Christ. Yes, we do contribute funding directly to NATO. But that’s not the fricking point of the 2% GDP argument that Trump is making. In fact, we contribute LESS direct funds as a percentage of GDP than our allies.
Trump’s argument is that NATO member countries are supposed to allocate 2% of their GDP to military spending. While the US spends ~3.5%, our allies mostly spend around 1-1.5%. This is the issue that Trump is talking about, and it is nothing to do with direct funding of NATO. So all of the people around here saying “just cut it to 2%” are actually arguing that we cut our entire defense budget by something like $300 billion.
Based on the $2 billion in operating costs you referenced, the US spends $440 million to fund NATO. Our total military spending (the number Trump is talking about as % of GDP) is over $650 billion.

Which in the present time is growing because of our GDP but yet the services of NATO are remaining stagnant from what I see. We're not getting bangs for our bucks. One country should not be bearing the burden of financing at least 60% of NATO's budget and with our rising GDP I see us financing even more of that budget.
Why not? We have the most to lose
