I remember listening to a music podcast a while back and the guy was stating how romanticized Nirvana was and how they were just the band that came around at the perfect time and the lead singer died at the perfect time.

This is my opinion on Cobain. I think he had limitations that would have been exposed as grunge died out and he had to adjust as an artist.
Grohl did that, in addition to the drummer to frontman transition. I don't think Cobain would have, but the iconic image left by him passing early masks that.
I have a similar unpopular opinion on Notorious BIG like that. He was a great lyricist, but never able to broaden what he covered topically. He would never have made Keep Ya Head Up like Pac. His death limited his catalogue to mask the lack of versatility.
