Been playing Dark Souls and have a few short thoughts

I mean, I don’t wanna say it’s not hard, but it’s not anything I haven’t seen before. I haven’t looked at any videos ever or spoiled any gameplay or plot of this game but I’d say I’m about....halfway in.
It’s challenging for sure but I honestly don’t see how this game became such a meme or a standard used to gauge difficulty levels in games. Then again, the setting and other things do factor into that as well, but that’s a whole other topic.
I’ve seen reviews of games that were not even in the same genre as Dark Souls that get the title in the article “the dark souls of _____.”
It’s dumb and never really includes the setting and mood I mentioned earlier. Mostly just describing difficulty. I’ve had much more trouble with Crash Bandicoot and Hollow Knight than this casual excuse for a hard game. Was it even marketed originally as being brutally difficult? Cause if so, they certainly didn’t do a good job of it.
I’m still enjoying the frick out of it though. To be clear, I’m talking strictly Dark Souls 1. Hopefully the others are a bit better in this specific regard.

It became a meme "The Dark Souls of..."
The thing is, it came out in 2011 when games were pretty much casual, and that trend continued in the older gens. Games were becoming hand-holding affairs and hints, tutorials, maps, etc were making games much easier than they were in the 8-bit/16-bit days.
Then DS1 came along and subverted it. It was so different than everything else in 2011 and the difficulty was more on par with old school games.
It was a product of it's time. Developers at the time didn't want to make harder games bc they were under the perception that it would put off casual gamers, and not enough "hardcore" gamers would buy it.

No.
Dude, people beat the game without being hit once. It’s completely doable and easy if you know what you’re doing or even have patience.
The game isn’t hard, it’s punishing. The fact you can’t just run around and through the level is what makes it hard since that’s what everyone wants to do nowadays.

where are you

you have experience with dodging and parrying from hollow knight, BOTW, and im sure other games that have similar mechanics, so of course you're going to be better at it from the jump.
in 2011, there was nothing like it at all. the learning curve was very steep for many people, and it was a huge influence on many games to come. you and other latecomers have benefited from this.

The game is punishing is completely true. If you're lazy and you aren't focused or and you keep doing the same shite that gets you killed every time, you'll think it's hard. There are plenty of new players to dark souls that complete it with a minimal amount of deaths. It depends on your playstyle really. I find that if you are impatient and rush, you're in for a hell of a bad time.

From a mechanics standpoint, it was different than anything else out at the time. Minimal direction, no explanation on leveling system or stats, checkpoint system dependent on the player, obscure multiplayer, and more tactical combat. Demon's Souls paved the way, and it was considered a throw away project.
It wasn't marketed as a difficult game initially, but that changed once it was ported to pc. And that really came from the community. The publisher just embraced it.
And you're right...it's not difficult. It's punishing. The better a player understands the system, the less trouble they'll have progressing.
For me, once I got it, it wasn't about difficulty. It was about exploring the world and lore. And helping others progress.

It is the opposite of how you'd play risk.

Lmao, I’m still laughing because you know OP wrote this shite with the intention of sounding like some kind of badass.

Which I get because all the really hard Nintendo games he plays has trivialized every other game ever

People forget how easy games were when DS1 first came out.
Over the seven years since so many games have incorporated elements from DS that nothing in it seems exceptional any more, but it was groundbreaking when it came out.

Punishing. Best way to put it. I've always thought this game and bloodbourne were not HARD but the start of the game has a steep learning curve. There are a LOT of people who would quit playing after dying a few times.
There are times when I do not want to be fully focused on a game....this game is not one of them.
