First time in 44 years that the US Army has made such a major change to the One Station Unit Training method for training infantry Soldiers.
Basic Training and Infantry AIT extended from 14 weeks to 22 weeks, starting THIS month.
The Fort Polk Guardian article is on page 4

Lead article is about a 10th Mtn Div NCO who lost both of his legs in combat during the deployment overseas. The unit recently returned to Ft Polk.

Must be taking all the girls a little bit longer to get through.

I'm in now. The length of 14 weeks kept me from signing up before, now they are getting to where I feel more comfortable.

BCT is changing across the board by August cycles. Sick Call and CBHS appointments are going to be through the roof.

The military and all their damn acronyms. Doesn't it get exhausting?

The Fort Polk Guardian weekly's article on this topic implied that SecDef Mattis himself is responsible for implementing the change. The change was on the table for years as something that might be done, but, apparently, Mad Dog Mattis came along and said, "Our infantry must become more lethal in battle, so, make this happen."

Back in the day. When it was hard.

Should extend initial training for all combat arms MOSs.
The idea of just giving basic knowledge then picking up the finer points at the unit was flawed from inception.

Surprised it’s a color photo

Nice pic.
Are you SURE that OSUT for infantry was more difficult back then? One thing's for sure, it was eight weeks shorter back then.
Eight extra weeks of being in the training unit seems like "harder" to me. As you know, being in a training unit is usually unpleasant.

The other combat arms are considering what you propose -- extending OSUT.

Why are random Joes in Bs while everyone else is in As?

Yeah, I don't think so. This Army's been at war since 1990, so, that makes for LOTS of experienced commanders, planners and operators.
And let's not pretend that the USMC is perfect. We know that they make their share of mistakes.

Army??? Hard???

It was 1981. We did not do combatives or the bayonet course. And it still kicked my narrow butt. Cannot imagine bumping that up to 22 weeks.

All Army basic training is going to be longer and tougher. There is no considering, it's happening next month.

Oh look. It is the junior partner of the U.S. Navy.

I went through OSUT at Ft Benning, GA's Sand Hill, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion/54th Infantry Brigade. I arrived at Fort Benning on Aug 18, started Basic Training on Aug 27, finished basic on Oct 30, started AIT on Nov 1, graduated AIT on Dec 3rd.
It was long enough. Closest experinence to prison I'll ever have (hopefully).
I feel sorry for those who have to endure 22 weeks.
