I was just a kid, but I was happy (at the time) to be rescued from that terrible song by the Bee Gees.

quote:

That was #1 for like a year.

10 weeks. But, you're right, it was inescapable badness for months - not exceeded until the godawful "Let's Get Physical" by Olivia Newton-John.

Anyway, back to Ms. Boone's assault on our musical sensibilities - it was dislodged from #1 before the end of the year by the Bee Gees with How Deep is Your Love, as Saturday Night Fever was gripping the nation (and the world). The Brothers Gibb (including Andy) would then dominate the first 2/3 of 1978 with #1 hits HDIYL(BG), Stayin' Alive (BG), Love is Thicker Than Water (AG), Night Fever (BG), and Shadow Dancing (AG) - essentially every #1 of 1978, through the end of July was by the Bee Gees or Andy, except 3 weeks by Player's Baby Come Back in January, Yvonne Elliman's If I Can't Have You(which was written by the Bee Gees, appeared on SNF and they sung background vocals) for 1 week, followed by (Paul McCartney) Wings' With a Little Luck for 2 weeks in May, then 1 week each by duets from Johnny Mathis and Denice Williams (Too Much, Too Little, Too Late), and John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John (You're the One that I Want).

So, in a streak that actually started on Christmas Eve, 1977, the Gibbs had the #1 song, outright, for 24 of 32 weeks, and arguably 25 if you count the Yvonne Elliman track.

I know you kids aren't impressed by record sales, because that's a mid/late 20th Century stat, but that's pretty GD impressive - trust me.
