You need a real gunsmith then.
I don't have one on the Northshore but be aware of guys saying they are a "gunsmith" who only know how to screw an AR-15 together.
Remington probably needs a detail break down and cleaning of gas ports.
The rifle just needs someone knowledgeable enough to drop a gauge in the chamber and confirm the bore. Just to be sure it isn't some weird wildcat chambering or something the guys that gave it to him thought up back then.
