Your home thermostat: On/Off/High/Low when you’re gone?

I’ve been told to turn the thermostat up and leave the a/c on while I’m away from the house if I wanted to save energy and have a low power bill. Well I’ve done that, and my lower bill is usually $100-$125 a month.
If I leave the air off while I’m at work and at night when I don’t need the a/c, I can have a $60-$90 power bill. What am I doing wrong?
Granted, the unit has to work twice as hard to get the temp down from say 86 down to 72. Wouldn’t that equal out if it just ran constantly all day?

You're complaining about a $60-$90 electric bill?

Nah, baw. I’m complaining about the $100-$125 power bill.

We have some of the lowest power bills in the country and I'm never down to $60.
I average $90 in the summer and $120 in the winter.

I’m in Eufaula and last April’s was $60ish if I remember. My usage for may is $100 using the “turnt up” method.
My beef with it is this. Regardless of the temperature, the unit will be constantly running. Whether I have it set to 75 or 80 doesn’t matter.

I leave mine off and the patio door open when i am gone during the day. My electric bill was $30 last month.

Why do you leave a door open? You’re not worried about burglars?
Posted on 6/13/18 at 12:03 am to finchmeister08
Mine is set at 76 during the summer and 72 during the winter

I have it set to start running an hour before I get home so the house is comfortable.

I believe the ideal away temp is 78. I keep it at 75 away and 71 while home during the summer. Electric bill dropped by $20 or so after installing my NEST. Love that thing. Never turn off btw.

As aware as I am of how dumb people are I’m still amazed that a grown man doesn’t know how this works
