I reached a new level of Internet nerddom today. What does Reddit gold do?

Anyone ever given or received gold before on Reddit? It appears to not actually hold monetary value for the recipient, which is a bit of a disappointment.

I received gold a few times but it's stupid. Now I have years worth because I was on some app that got bought out. Most of the features you get with gold can easily be replicated with RES

I only ever cruise Reddit on the Bacon Reader app so I don't even know what the features are.

I don't know what it is but I've heard of it. I assume it's a scheme from reddit to make more money.
