Spinning reels seizing after salt trip

Strange happenings with two of my reels(Both Daiwa) this weekend. One has been on 4/5 salt trips while the other was basically new. I did nothing different this time. Fished, then good rinse, fished, then good rinse....
It would start with a little trouble getting the reel to start spinning, but once it would start it would be fine. Got worse over the weekend with the older one. The newer one got a Reel Magic dose while we were there and is now somewhat OK.
So, I get home yesterday and give the older one a good soaking in water, then Reel magic, and no change. Throw it away, or take the time to take apart and more thoroughly clean?

Ive had the same thing happen with a Daiwa Procyon (one of my favorite spinners) after soaking it one time.
I took it apart and cleaned it as much as I could and wiped the old grease out and put new. Doused it in Reel Magic where needed.
Ever since it has been as smooth as it use to be. I've just made sure to lightly rinse after a salt trip for the last 3 years and havent had the issue return.
Its been a great reel so was worth the time and effort to me.
Good luck

I'll give it a go this week. It doubles as my drop shot reel, and it will be much needed this weekend at Toledo bend.

get a bottle of salt-away (west marine or amazon).
fill a bucket with warm water and add salt-away, drop the reels in and let them soak

Always soak in warm water after using in salt water. It helps dissolve the salt. Also, check the bail and gears for a bit of sand or salt. Both will gum up the works. You probable have some grit in the grease as well. Degrease it and reapply fresh about every three trips.

Found your problem. Stick with Shimano or Penn

Sorry, but I don't see any reason or benefit to soaking a reel. Seems like it would do more harm than good, with Salt-Away or otherwise.

Hell, I just lay my rods on the deck and rinse them off with the hose. No issues after several years

That's pretty much what I do as well. I'll hit them and my rods with a towel too, if I'm feeling spry. I don't see anything good that can come from soaking.

Stop. do not open the main body. Pull the spool off, remove the spin assembly, then take out the anti-reverse bearing and clean it thoroughly. Then put back together.
Will feel like new, if it doesn't I'll buy you lunch next time I'm in Alx

All I ever do with mine is rinse them and then wipe them with a towel. Although all my reels are made for salt environments, perhaps your reel in question is not?

just order new bearings for them, its cheaper then new reels and will make them like new again.
once salt water gets into the bearings they are shot, no amount of cleaning, lube, or grease can undo that damage.
in the future keep a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water to leave them sit in overnight after surf fishing or getting wet with salt water, then clean and put fresh grease and lube on them.

I don’t think you’re ever supposed to soak reels in water, just rinse off and dry (I use a fan). I also only use Shimano as my experience with Diana and Pfleuger weren’t good.
Even added some $20 Sienna 2500s when they were on sale @ Cabelas as guest reels. Most of my reels are +3 years!with some being close to 10.

X 2 I've never heard of a manufacturer's instructions to soak a reel. The goal is to keep water out. I rinse then wipe them down, oil as needed.
OP, are you sure it wasn't dried braided line sticking together?

Note when you put the AR bearing back in, if it's upside down the reel won't crank forward.
also, no or very very little oil in the bearing after you clean it. Shimano AR bearings actually are stamped "no grease" and go in dry (giggle). I don't know about Diawa, but at most use the tip of toothpic to put a little oil on every other bearing pin.
let me know how it goes

Did not have time last night. Hope to take it apart tonight.
