In 1963, a Turkish man in the region of Cappadocia was making improvements to his home when he made an incredible discovery. After knocking down a wall in his basement, he stumbled upon a secret room, which led to an underground tunnel, which opened up into a completely hidden ancient city: Derinkuyu. Photos of the preserved city reveal how 20,000 people - including livestock and entire food supplies - could have lived 18 stories beneath the earth.

the Underground City Caves may have been built initially in the soft volcanic rock of the Cappadocia region by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, in the 8th–7th centuries BC

Stumbled across this the other day. Pretty amazing what people were able to accomplish so long ago.

ETA: I'll have to find it, but I did read there was a 5 mile tunnel that led to another underground city.

I don't know if I would have told anyone when I found it. Just think of the square footage he essentially added to his home. The ultimate bug out shelter.

If something like that happened in the US, the IRS would show up wanting back taxes bc our home would suddenly be bigger than previously thought.

nope, government would use eminent domain to force the homeowner out for pennies on the dollar, then declare this a 'national park' and never allow anyone else to go and explore the tunnels except BLM personnel.

Longyou Caves
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Longyou Caves are a series of large artificial sandstone caverns located at Phoenix Hill, near the village of Shiyan Beicun on the Qu River in Longyou County, Quzhou prefecture, Zhejiang province, China. They are thought to date to a period before the creation of the Qin Dynasty in 212 BCE, although no trace of their construction or even their existence has been located in the historic record

The caves are very large considering their man-made origin: the average floor area of each cave is over a 1,000 square metres (11,000 sq ft), with heights of up to 30 metres (98 ft), and the total area covered is in excess of 30,000 square metres (320,000 sq ft)..
