Question though, the links you posted seemed geared to showers. This isn’t in the shower, it’s just the floor of the bathroom. Same concept though?

Yes, same thing, just no water proofing required.
You can install a wood decking with a tile backer board screwed to it, but it will be almost impossible to get that at the correct height so that the top of your floor tile are even with the base tile along your wall. It might be possible if you are a really good carpenter. If you are that handy, you can probably handle the dry pack floor though.
You may want to get a Mexican from in front the nearest Home Depot.
