What do I need for this project? 1x6? Any particular wood? Pine is easy but maybe something lighter?

Cedar. Building some myself today.
ETA: you can use 1 x 4's if you want to be a little different and go with 4 vertical slats instead of the typical 3. Just a thought

I used treated pine for mine.
Edit: just noticed the end where you were looking for something else besides pine.
Outside of pine or cedar not sure what else you can use thats easily available.

Not really. I'm not opposed to pine. I just didn't know if something would work better.

Clear redwood is the obvious best choice. Make sure to seal all sides and ends before painting.

Red grandis is what the pros use. Service lumber carries it

Use extira if you have a router. Comes in 4x8 sheets and 2’x16’ sheets. Route the V-grooves and slap a 4” rip at top and bottom for battens.
