Question about fasting

Saw in the OT board where a poster suggested heavy lifting days in the heels of a 24 hour fast. Poster mentioned that a male’s natural HGH production is 20x normal at this time. That kinda makes sense to me (biologically), but I’d never heard about this regimen / theory.

Thinking about getting back in shape. Recently divorced, not overweight, in good general health. I’m 50. Been 10 years since I been in shape. Regarding the heavy lifting after fasting theory (if I need to read a bunch more in this : the answers aren’t that “general”, please just let me know that):

1. If I planned to lift say 3 days a week, and cardio / swim 3 days, is it as simple as “just don’t eat the 24 hours before lift mornings?”

2. Does it make that much of a difference / speed things up noticeably?

3. Does a 50 year old even get the HGH increase / benefit?

4. Is this “fasting before lifting” a relatively new phenomenon? Again, never heard of this, but I been outta the gym 10 years, and it kinda does make sense.

5. Assuming the fast is a true zero calorie/lots of water during that time is ok/suggested?

More important is making sure you are eating enough overall calories consistently and lifting consistently. Fasting has its benefits but they are largely overstated.

Being 50, your natural hgh production is on the downhill. The lowering of blood sugar levels will probably be a bigger benefit to you if you’re going the fasted route.

I totally agree Hulk!

Do not strength train 3 times a week after a 24 hour fast. If you have fat to lose 16:8 would be more appropriate to try Make sure you are eating enough. Ultimately it comes down to calories and health. Best of luck.

About 3 weeks ago I started the 24 hour fast on accident but I’ve been sticking with it. I usually eat my meal around 4:30pm and train around 4:30 am, so far so good. I went from 213 to 210 as of this morning with no noticeable difference in strength or endurance.

Do a search on here for kinobody. I link the programs in there. Do the warrior shredding program and click the macros link I listed also. Plug the macros it gives you into MyFitnessPal. Hit those macros, doesn't matter if you fast or not, hit those macros. The preferred method would be to fast 16 hours and eat those macros in an 8 hour window, but most of all just hit the damn macros and do the program.

Don't be obsessive. It will be good to have a workout ruitine either way.
